Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic Clinical Support Worker who will be responsible for working alongside and supporting the trained chemotherapy nurses in the delivery of high standards of specialist cancer and palliative care within the Macmillan Primrose Unit at Bedford Hospital NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit someone ready for a new challenge with good listening skills, a sympathetic nature, someone who would be an excellent communicator to deliver the following main duties:

  1. To provide skilled nursing care under the supervision of the nurse providing care, undertaking routine and specifically identified tasks. This will include but is not limited to patient observation, phlebotomy, urinalysis, blood glucose monitoring and, ECG's, cannulation removal, scalp cooling therapy.
  2. To support team members in their professional work.3.
  3. Monitor and replenish stock levels within the Primrose unit and order as appropriate

Job description

Job responsibilities

  1. To provide skilled nursing care under the supervision of the nurse providing care, undertaking routine and specifically identified tasks. This will include but is not limited to patient observation, phlebotomy, urinalysis, blood glucose monitoring and, ECGs, cannulation removal, scalp cooling therapy.
  2. Requesting Blood tests on ICE as per instruction from registered nurses or medical team.
  3. To rotate between chemotherapy day unit and phlebotomy clinic,
  4. To inform Nurse in Charge of any matters affecting the standard of patient care delivery
  5. To support other team members in their professional work.
  6. To be aware of current issues and policies within the Trust and the Primrose Unit
  7. To assist the nurse in charge with the cost-effective use of resources in patient care delivery
  8. Monitor and replenish stock levels within the Primrose unit and order as appropriate
  9. To take part in the development of practice guidelines within the unit/ward
  10. To assist Nurse in Charge in identifying, implementing and monitoring the standards of care
  11. To be aware of the patient as an individual and adopt a holistic approach to the delivery of care.
  12. Dealing with occasional unpleasant conditions such as bodily fluids and assisting the qualified nurse in dealing with violence and aggression
  13. To assist the qualified nurse in the risk assessments of all patients and carry out manual handling as per Trust Policy
  14. To communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team throughout the Primrose Unit and Trust
  15. To maintain patient confidentiality at all times
  16. To liaise and communicate effectively with patients and relatives referring them to the nurses regarding their care, treatment and discharge process.
  17. To be aware of the current Trust Health & Safety policies and practice in accordance with these policies
  18. To attend yearly statutory training in fire, manual handling, infection control, and Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation.
  19. To report to nurse in Charge incidents/ accidents to staff, patients and visitors.
  20. To report to any defective or faulty equipment to Nurse In Charge as appropriate
  21. To ensure proper care and usage of equipment in the Primrose Unit.
  22. To participate in the in-service training programme (included staff orientation programme) to enhance patient care.
  23. To maintain and up-date own development.
  24. To ensure statutory and personal development is achieved in line with your Personal Development Plan agreed during your appraisal.
  25. To attend and contribute regularly to Primrose Unit meetings
  26. To participate in objectives setting and yearly appraisals.
  27. To demonstrate trust values on a daily basis.
