Job summary

Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals for the post of a Locum Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Bedford Hospital NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking to appoint a Locum Colorectal and General Surgeon to work on the Bedford site. This is a purely benign colorectal post, with no elective cancer resection activity. The appointee would be expected to be proficient in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. The appointee would be expected to support the Straight to Test pathway for 2ww referrals supporting the 28 day faster diagnosis targets. The appointee will contribute to the emergency general surgery service, on a 1:7 rota (split weeks) with plans to move to a 1:8 rota.

The new appointee will be expected to assist in the development and provision of the core colorectal and general services at Bedford Hospital, contributing to the activity of the department and taking on other roles and responsibilities as required. There is a continuous responsibility for teaching, training and supervision of junior medical staff. An interest in the teaching of undergraduates, nurses and allied health professionals is desirable with activity to support audit and research activities encouraged. The Trust is committed to supporting Continuing Medical Education as part of revalidation with appropriate mentoring provided dependent on the particular needs of the appointee.

Prospective candidates should hold full GMC registration and be on the Specialist Register of the GMC for General Surgery. It is desirable that they hold JAG Accreditation in colonoscopy (diagnostic and therapeutic) but essential to be working towards this requirement.

The applicant should be fully laparoscopically trained, and will contribute to the laparoscopic colorectal service at Bedford Hospital. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the general surgical workload (laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia repair etc.) but with no specific requirement to undertake elective paediatric surgery. There are similar levels of laboratory, radiology and middle grade support at the weekend as during the week.
