Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a medical secretary to join the Dermatology department at Bedford Hospital.

The post holder will be expected to provide efficient and effective medical secretarial support to two consultants and their team.

Having a positive, enthusiastic and "can do" attitude with a strong work ethic is important. You must have excellent communication skills and be comfortable in dealing with patients and carers' telephone calls and queries. You will require competency in all Microsoft Office 365 packages.

The ability to demonstrate your initiative and work as part of a dedicated team is an important part of this job.

Main duties of the job

Ensure that an excellent level of customer care is delivered to patients and members of the public.

Receive queries from General Practitioners, patients, relatives and carers and ensuring appropriate responses and confidentiality.

Ensure that the administration of the department is efficient, effective and responsive (e.g. dealing with queries, correspondence and day-to-day issues)

Ensure that patient case notes are maintained, ensuring any incoming correspondence is sent for scanning into the patients notes.

Co-ordinate clinics and book patient follow up appointments.

Receive post and undertake follow up action as required.

Transcribe from dictation, ensuring letters are grammatical and well-presented

Prepare and circulate information about consultant absences, giving instructions regarding cancellations or amendments to clinics and operating lists

Maintain and promote effective communication with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and wards/departments, including formal and informal presentation of information relating to the service.

To demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in dealing with patients/clients, visitors/relatives and colleagues, maintaining good customer relations.

Receive and respond to queries from external parties, patients and relatives, or other departments, escalating more complex / clinical queries to the relevant member of the team.
