Job summary

The Decontamination Services Department is looking to recruit hard working, enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join their team. The position of porter offers successful candidates the opportunity work within a well-established and friendly team and train in all aspects of decontamination and sterile logistics.

The Decontamination Department is responsible for the provision of decontamination and sterilisation services to surgical theatres, endoscopy, outpatient departments and clinics/wards of the Trust. The successful candidate will be required to work in all areas of the hospital and full training will be providedAt Bedford Hospital are main priority is to deliver safe and high quality care to our patient. Main duties of the job

The Decontamination Services at Bedford Hospital which includes Sterile Services and Endoscopy has a vacancy for an Endoscopy Porter. This is part time position of 28 1/2 hours per week, working every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 8am till 6pm.

To provide effective and efficient collection and distribution service for surgical theatre equipment, flexible endoscopes and other reusable devices for use in direct patient care.

To provide support to decontamination staff by ensuring that materials for decontamination are; readily available in all work areas, storage facilities are kept well stocked, materials are received, stored correctly and maintained in a clean and tidy condition.

The Decontamination Department is responsible for providing comprehensive decontamination services to the Trust. The post holder will develop effective working relationships with departmental colleagues and internal stakeholders.

  • Collect used/contaminated items from wards and departments and return to SSD/Endoscopy for decontamination
  • Ensure trolleys for transporting instruments are regularly cleaned, maintained and prepared for use, and any repairs or replacements are reported to the appropriate personnel.
  • Be familiar with the location/destination of all instruments and understand the importance of accuracy needed in this task
  • To contribute to maintaining the safety and security of patients/clients, staff and the care of the environment.
  • To work as part of the Decontamination Services team establishing and maintaining professional relationships with all the members of the multidisciplinary team, patients/clients and visitors.
  • Receiving information over the telephone in an effective and concise manner to an appropriate person.
  • Report any potential dangerous equipment/situation within the department/hospital to an appropriate senior member of staff.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties that may be required to ensure the smooth running and efficient delivery of the service.
  • Develop communication skills that will enable relevant information to be obtained and referred when necessary.
  • Participate in the transfer of sterile/highly disinfected items to allocated storage items within the theatre complex.
