Job summary
Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust has a high number of referrals to the Lower Gastrointestinal (LGI) colorectal and Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) 2 Week Wait (2WW) referral service. The 2WW LGI and UGI pathway has been embedded to provide a "Straight To Test" nurse led service. Pathway protocols have been implemented where referrals to the LGI and UGI pathway will be triaged by the Straight to test Nurse via the Referral Assessment Service (RAS) so patients being urgently referred for suspected upper GI or colorectal cancer do not need to attend an initial outpatient's consultation. At the point of referral by the STT the appropriate patients can be booked 'Straight to Test' e.g. colonoscopy or OGD. This model will reduce the waiting time for the patient to be diagnosed and treated. Following review of the results, patients will either be discharged back to their GP or offered an Outpatient appointment. The post holder will be responsible for the clinical assessment for diagnostic procedures, delivering results and making tertiary referrals as appropriate.
The aim of the STT is to reduce the waiting time from referral to investigation, and shorten time to diagnosis and treatment. The patient will require fewer hospital attendances, and patient experience will improve as the pathway will be more efficient and streamlined. The post will also offer cover and support to the Lower GI Nursing service in the form of managing a risk stratified follow up service.
Main duties of the job
- Triage of referrals to the appropriate pathway (STT or Out Patient Appointment)
- Clinical assessment of patient's to the right diagnostic procedure(s) for their symptoms i.e, Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, CT Colonography, CT Abdo/pelvis, OGD, Barium Swallow and Colon Capsule.
- To work closely with the LGI and UGI teams to provide a timely and quality service
- Provide support and implement stratified Risk Follow up which is personal to the individual
- Audit outcomes and provide statistics to the cancer management teams
