Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who would be keen to join our dedicated breast radiology department covering both symptomatic and screening services at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS FT.
You would be joining a cohesive team of five breast radiologists, six breast clinicians and two consultant practitioners covering symptomatic work at Bedford Hospital and screening at Beds & Herts Breast Screening Service which is one of the largest breast screening services in the country.
There is a small component of breast specialty cross sectional reporting but no on call commitment, making the position very attractive to those with young children.
Main duties of the job
Providing imaging support for one stop breast clinics to include x-ray, ultrasound and intervention.
Provide localisation of impalpable breast lesions prior to surgery.
Breast specialty reporting to include CT and breast MRI.
Attending weekly symptomatic MDT.
Screen reading of NHSBSP mammograms.
Screening assessment clinics.
Attending weekly screening MDTs.
Service development and leadership.
You would have the opportunity to be involved in the development of the symptomatic service at Bedford and we would be keen to develop your leadership skills.
We are about to replace the mammography equipment to include tomosynthesis and contrast enhanced mammography and the PACS system is in the process of replacement.
The role is full time with no on call however applicants wishing to work less than full time would be considered.
About us
Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS FT was formed in April 2020 and incorporates Bedford Hospital and Luton & Dunstable University Hospital. It is situated on two sites, and provides care to a population of around 620,000 across Bedfordshire.
Beds & Herts Breast Screening Service is a hub and spoke model service providing screening to almost all of Bedfordshire and most of Hertfordshire and screens around 55,000 ladies each year. The breast screening service is based at the Luton site.
Both Bedford and Luton are conveniently situated with easy access to motorways, Luton airport and the rail network. Both are vibrant multicultural towns with excellent state and independent schools and easy access to surrounding countryside and villages.

- Evaluation of women recalled following recall from the NHS Breast Screening Programme.
- Requesting specialist imaging and performing breast interventional techniques under ultrasound and stereotactic guidance.
- Performing pre-operative localisations.
- Perform hot reporting for one stop clinics.
- Reporting of follow up mammograms.
- Provide appropriate advice and counselling to women attending one stop and screening assessment clinics.
- Read a minimum of 5000 mammograms per year to comply with NHSBSP requirements.
- Participation in consensus film reading and review of interval cancers.
- Attend regular surgical and screening MDTs to include review of breast imaging and cross sectional imaging as well as discussion of biopsy results and management plans.

- Participate in reading of PERFORMS test set on regular basis
- Participate in development and maintenance of SOPs

Reporting of cross sectional imaging for breast patient undergoing staging and other investigations.
