Job summary
Working as part of the OMFS, Orthodontic and Restorative Laboratory Team, the post holder will take the role of Senior Dental Technician to support the Restorative, Orthodontic and Oral Surgery service. The highly skilled individual will be expert in providing high quality complex work in both orthodontic and restorative dentistry for oral rehabilitation cases, using conventional removable, fixed and implant retained dental prostheses.
The post holder will be supported by the latest Cad-Cam software and 3D printing facilities.
The ability to manage and prioritise workload and to participate in research and development programmes is crucial to the post.
Main duties of the job
The duties and responsibilities listed below should be undertaken in accordance with the levels of competence as defined in the KSF outline for this post. In addition all staff are expected to act in accordance with the values and behaviours of the Trust.
- Design and construct complex, routine and non-routine, fixed, removable and implant retained custom made medical devices and models (gypsum and 3D printed) for the Oral/Maxillofacial, Orthodontic & Restorative Dentistry Service at Bedfordshire Hospital, Luton and Dunstable site.
- To be an expert advisor on all aspects of removable Prosthetics & Orthodontics providing advice to consultant colleagues, multidisciplinary teams (MDT), laboratory staff, medical and nursing staff.
- To play an active role in the digital pathway of technical work and participate in the continued development of this service.
- Prioritise own workload, organising multiple technical tasks, using own initiative, working in a small team, following laboratory prescriptions.
- Attend clinics and provide assistance and instruction to clinicians and consultants for the design and manufacture of custom made medical devices such as obturators for patients undergoing benign or malignant oral/extra oral deformities / diseases, including terminally ill patients.
- Construct trauma appliances, i.e. arch bars, splints at short notice.
- Communicate all relevant information to multidisciplinary team including patients.

- Maintain and develop own professional competence and maintain GDC registration.
- Work closely with the Lead Technologists to support the Restorative and Orthodontic service.
- Observe and comply with current health & safety, COSSH and Medical Devices Directive.
- Uses computerised laboratory systems, equipment and maintain records of medical devices/update material LOT numbers.
- Participate in education and training of junior staff / nurses / technicians
- Exposure to highly toxic and noxious fumes from chemicals stored and used in the laboratory i.e. Methyl-Methacrylate, Sulphuric acid, Petroleum spirits etc. Laboratory COSHH safety protocols must be followed i.e. correct fume cabinet and storage unit usage.
- Exposure to bodily fluids during model casting and appliance repair. Laboratory cleaning and decontamination procedures must be adhered to at all times.
- Be responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of own workspace along with highly specialised and complex machinery in the laboratory. Any defects to report to laboratory manager.
- Support and cover other services provided by the laboratory when required, i.e. staff on annual leave, sickness, managers request etc.
- To liaise with building and engineering services as required i.e. report faults within laboratory to estates.
- Monitor and maintain stock levels, creating orders using computerised purchasing systems.
- Lift heavy plaster buckets and refill storage units when required.
- Long periods of concentration required sitting at work bench and standing in plaster room.
- Attend clinics when requested to advise and help adjust custom made appliances.
