An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Band 6 specialist nurse to join our highly motivated, dynamic and friendly Multidisciplinary Obesity team in The Surgical Division at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital.
The holder of this post will provide specialist expertise to people with complex obesity within both Tier 3 and Tier 4 services (medical management pathway & surgical pathway). The post holder will work alongside a wide range of other allied health professionals to ensure that our patients receive high quality care. Our team consists of nurses, dietitians, consultant physicians/surgeons, clinical psychologists, an exercise practitioner, administrative staff and service coordinators.
This post offers the successful applicant the involvement of innovating treatment programmes to meet the changing needs of the service and to develop group based and virtual sessions for patients. This role consists of a hybrid working pattern in an outpatient setting.
The Obesity Service is a busy yet fulfilling outpatient department which focuses on the medical management of Obesity and pre-operative and post-operative care for our Bariatric Surgery patients. It is a well-established unit in the field of Obesity and Bariatric surgery covering the whole of East of England.

Main duties of the job
To work as an Obesity Nurse Specialist in both Tier 3 and Tier 4 services as part of an extended and experienced multi-disciplinary team. You will work closely with other nurses, dietitians, physicians, surgeons, psychologists and administrative team to assess, provide intervention and monitor patients from a widespread geographical area requiring specialist input from the Luton & Dunstable Specialist Obesity Services. This outpatient-focused role will include hybrid working, both on-site and remote.

- Undertake holistic assessment of patients who have been referred to the Obesity clinic, thereby determining suitability and implementing a personalised care pathway. Assessments will include current health status, weight history, level of motivation and ability to comply with treatment.
- Based on assessment, to plan, implement and evaluate patient care delivered within the nurse led clinic, ensuring evidence-based best practice and clinical audit of practice.
- To manage patients within a nurse-led obesity treatment programme as part of the multidisciplinary Obesity Clinic team in conjunction with the Consultants and in accordance with protocols
- Provide nutritional, motivational and health promotion advice to patients both in the nurse led clinics and over the telephone where appropriate.
- To assess and support patients referred for bariatric surgery both pre and post-operatively, liaising with the consultants and MDT and ensuring protocols and NICE guidance requirements are adhered to.
- Undertake venepuncture, if indicated in patients pathway. Review results and take appropriate action with results. Actions include informing patient and/or GP, or referring to Physician or Surgeon for further management advice.
- To communicate effectively with patients, using sensitivity and tact, empathy and reassurance, motivational skills and assessing/overcoming barriers to change.
- To assist with clinical data collection for audit purposes for both medical and surgical programmes
- Undertake telephone duty when allocated using clinical knowledge to triage patients needs. Ensure thorough assessment and offer sound advice. In the event of patient needing immediate care, further advice from appropriate surgeon should be sought and if deemed necessary, admission for further assessment and possible treatment should be initiated.
- To assist in setting standards, objectives and priorities in span of care.
- To correspond with G.Ps and other health professionals involved in patient care - receiving and providing sensitive and complex information.
- To maintain concise, accurate medical records utilising word processing and database input. Understand the importance of data collection for audit purposes. Ensure that all patients data that are seen within your clinics are entered into the appropriate data collection programme.
- Utilise the digital applications available to the service to offer further support and education for patients
