Job summary
Applications are invited to apply for a substantive appointment. The successful applicant will be part of a team of six consultant cardiologists based at Bedford Hospital. The general cardiology workload is shared, but all cardiologists have sub-specialty interests and the appointee will be responsible for developing complex echocardiography (in particular stress Echocardiography) and if appropriately trained coronary CT imaging.
Main duties of the job
The new appointee will be responsible for ward cover once in 6 weeks when there will be minimal other commitments. This post involves care for cardiology patients only and has no general medicine component. There is no specific on call commitment but the appointee will perform a ward round at the weekend on a 1 in 6 basis.

The Bedford site has a dedicated cardiac unit with outpatient, diagnostic and office facilities and a cardiac catheterization laboratory. There is a sixteen bedded Cardiac Care Unit with adjacent cardiac ward shared with the endocrine team. We perform general cardiology, including coronary angiography, PCI, heart failure, stress and transoesophageal echocardiography and bradycardia pacing on the Bedford site. The non-invasive facility is housed in the main cardiology block next to the outpatients and has 4 Phillips Epic machines with the latest software. CT and MRI are on site and suitable for cardiac work.
We provide a senior ward round seven days a week. There is currently no specific on-call, but the appointee will perform morning ward rounds on the weekend once a month.
We have well established links with Royal Papworth Hospital, our local tertiary centre, which is thirty miles away.
Possession of MRCP or equivalent qualification is essential and applicants must be holders of a CCT in cardiology or be within 6 months of obtaining a cardiology CCT.
