Job summary

Applications are invited for the above NHS locum post for this 660 bedded acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000.

This an exciting time to join the Cellular Pathology department at Bedford Hospital, which has now merged with the Luton & Dunstable Hospital to form the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The department has recently secured £2.7million funding for the full implementation of digital histopathology reporting across both sites and this will be implemented in early 2023.

The appointee will be part of a team of seven Consultants on the Bedford site. A further ten consultants are based on the L&D site.The Cellular Pathology Department deals with a wide range of clinical specialties. Consideration will be given to the appointee's areas of special interest.

The laboratory has full UKAS accreditation.

Main duties of the job

The Key tasks for the role of Consultant in Cellular Pathology are;

  • To provide the Trust's diagnostic histopathology service in conjunction with consultant colleagues.
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD).

The introduction of digital pathology is a new and innovative development for the department. The Department is housed within a modern purpose-built building and each consultant has a single-occupancy office, computer and consultant-grade microscope, and digital workstations are currently being installed.

The case mix is typical of a district general hospital. In addition there are bowel cancer and breast screening services There may be an opportunity to undertake diagnostic non-gynaecological cytology reporting, but this is not a requirement. The department is extremely friendly and supportive.

Luton and Dunstable hospital has recently merged with Bedford hospital. There is currently no need to work cross-site at Luton and Dunstable Hospital but candidates who wish to work cross site may be able to pursue this.

Limited home working is actively supported where possible and with the introduction of digital pathology this should enable further opportunities in this area.

The allocation of programmed activities will be based on 8.5 for direct clinical care and 1.5 for supporting professional activities. The detailed job plans will be agreed in consultation with the Clinical Director, with the approval of the Medical Director and Chief Executive or his/ her representative.
