Senior Clinical Fellow- Accident & Emergency

Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council.
The post is not recognised for training and therefore does not have educational and training approval from the Postgraduate Dean or Royal College. In all other respects the postholder will have identical terms and conditions of service to the departments other Clinical experience and research opportunities will be available for individuals wishing to progress in their career and both study leave and educational development time will be available to allow personal development.

Main duties of the job
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Emergency Medicine Doctor to work at the Bedford Hospital Site Emergency Department. You must be dedicated to providing high quality emergency care, maintaining clinical standards, and continually looking to drive positive change by developing the service.
This is an exciting challenge for an Emergency Medicine Doctor who is keen to be at the heart of delivering a modern emergency medicine service across resus, majors, ambulatory majors, minor injuries, and paediatrics

Job responsibilities
The Emergency Department at the Bedford Hospital site has recently completed the first phase of major redevelopment work and has:
- increased the waiting area capacity for adult patients
- increased the number of treatment cubicles
- provided a co-located Paediatric ED
Further redevelopment works will take place in 2022 to install a co-located CT scanner and improve the staff change and rest facilities.
The department is supported by the Urgent Treatment Centre and Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC), which accommodates both ambulatory and non-ambulatory GP referrals as well as suitable patients streamed directly from the ED. The department is a Trauma Unit within the East of England Trauma Network and has a full paediatric service, which means the full breadth of Emergency Medicine is on offer.
Role of the Senior Clinical Fellow
The Senior Clinical Fellow will be required to assist in the day-to-day running of the Department as directed by the Consultants, and play an active role in shop floor management.
General Duties:
- All patients to be seen and assessed in accordance with departmental guidance.
- Offer oversight and advice to junior doctors as required, escalating to the ED Consultant on the shop floor as appropriate.
- Keeping meticulous patient records is essential. These must be dated and initialled, together with any other related administrative duties, including discharge letters, review of x-ray and pathology reports. All patients seen must be coded appropriately prior to discharge.
- Duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances are at the request of the appropriate Consultant(s) in consultation where possible with colleagues both senior and junior. Additional commitments arising under this paragraph are exceptional. In particular, the Senior Clinical Fellows will not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
- To read and follow any protocols and clinical guidelines laid down (either in writing or verbally) for the department.
- In case of any difficulties, either clinical or administrative, to ensure timely advice is sought from a senior colleague/ ED Consultant.
- To accurately gather data required for clinical audit and to participate in audit meetings.
- To participate in Middle Grade Teaching which is for an hour a week.
NOTE: Specific duties may vary from time to time to ensure that specific, departmental competencies are achieved and personal interests are developed.
