Job summary

The Christie is pleased to be able to offer an opportunity for a suitably experienced individual to join the Haematology and Teenage and Young Adult Service (TYA) to take on a role as data coordinator.

There is a opportunity for a permanent post and a 12month fixed term post within this application.

Based at the Withington site, you will be a valued member of the Haematology and TYA quality team and work alongside one other Data Coordinator. Your role will involve the collation, analysis and reporting of data relating to treatment and outcome of patients within the haematology department.

Main duties of the job

This post will work closely with and be supported by the Quality Manager, Quality Officer and Directorate Lead Nurse and will work alongside one other Data Coordinator.

We are looking for a self-motivated, proactive individual who is able to work well independently but also as part of a team. You must have good attention to detail, numerical and analytical skills as you must ensure the completeness, accuracy and consistency of the data so that it meets the standards of quality expected for reporting to national and local commissioners and for use in national and international audit and research.

You must be educated to degree level with a computing qualification and be able to demonstrate excellent IT skills and a high level of competency in in all Microsoft packages, especially Excel. Although not essential, a science, mathematical or statistical related degree would be advantageous.

If you are educated to a degree level with a computing qualification and have experience in working within clinical audit, information systems and hospital data then you are the right person to consider joining the quality team within the Haematology and TYA directorate.

The Christie is one of Europe's leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country. We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year.

The Christie haematology service acts as a tertiary referral centre for the management of patients with haematological malignancies and bone marrow failure. Inpatient haematology and transplant services for both adults and Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) patients are provided by the 31 bedded Palatine Treatment Ward, and the 4 bedded Withington Ward. Outpatient haematology services are provided by the Haematology and Transplant Day Unit (HTDU) and the ambulatory care facility. The Christie haematology service has grown extensively over the past few years with the development of new treatments and CAR T. Services are now delivered at 2 other trusts with plans to expand services closer to home further.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Ensure the efficient and accurate collection of clinical data relating to patients within the defined haematology speciality.
  • Ensure the completeness, accuracy and consistency of the data so that it meets the standards of quality expected for reporting to national and local commissioners and for use in national and international audit and research.
  • Perform statistical analysis of transplant data to assess transplant outcomes, including overall survival and non-relapse mortality.
  • Manage the reporting of transplantation outcomes and submit to the European Bone Marrow Transplant (EBMT) registry.
  • Contribute to the design of protocols, which define what and when data is to be collected.
  • Produce reports for the Haematology Directorate and subspecialty meetings.
  • Work with staff at the Christie to ensure the accurate collection of data and ways to improve collection in the future. Communicate data quality issues to team.
  • Identify clinical data that can be collected electronically from other systems in the hospital.
  • Participate with in-house, external and independent audits providing requested information/reports.
  • Request and obtain patient data from outside hospitals and institutions.
  • Search for and retrieve results and data from patient health records, laboratory systems and hospital computerised patient administration system.
  • General clerical and office management duties within the office including the maintenance of an efficient filing system.
  • Work with clinicians, managers and administration staff to review working practices, identify new improved ways of working and find solutions to problems
