Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join the TYA team delivering care to TYA patients with a range of Cancers. The TYA Education and Employment Youth Lead post holder will work within the busy and dynamic TYA team covering both the inpatient and outpatient setting based at the Christie Hospital. The role is to lead on the delivery of the Youth Support service team and develop the Education and employment Provision for TYA patients who have undergone treatment for Cancer and up to 2 years post treatment.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated and driven to improve patient care and experience and will have significant experience supporting TYA patients with youth/education/employment support within the hospital and community setting.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead the TYA Youth Support Service with a focus on the delivery of a high quality effective youth support provision incorporating setting up and supporting the education and employment needs of TYA patients.
  • Provide knowledge and support in the care and treatment of a diverse caseload of TYA patients with Cancer.
  • Demonstrate a highly specialist knowledge and skills in the youth support, education and employment needs of TYA patients with a range of malignancies.
  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge and skills project leadership with the youth setting.
  • Provide inpatient, outpatient and home visit support to TYA patients across the North West.
  • Provide youth support, education and employment leadership to enhance and support the TYA service.
  • Work alongside the medical, AHP and nursing teams, maintaining good communication and collaboration between the various multidisciplinary teams.
  • To be a highly visible and approachable role model, ensuring that high quality care is provided within the TYA Youth Support provision.

Job responsibilities

  • You will be based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, ensuring all patients receive age appropriate, high quality social and emotional support.
  • You will work as part of the Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) team to provide TYA support services for 16-25 year olds who have a cancer diagnosis.
  • To lead the Youth Support Coordinator (YSC) team and act as the lead for developing an Education & Employment support service to ensure all young people having treatment as outpatients or inpatients at the PTC or are within 2 years of having treatment have access to high quality support.
  • Based at the Principle Treatment Centre (PTC), you will see patients within the PTC and travel across the region to provide advice and support for young people at various hospitals and at home.
  • To provide and lead, the established YSC service, ensuring a wide range of appropriate recreational activities are provided and lead on the Education and Employment support provision available to all TYA patients.
  • To participate in the multi-disciplinary team using specific skills to contribute to the care and understanding of the young people and their families and carers
  • Link with local businesses and the Christie Charity to explore employment support opportunities.
  • Lead on the development of a accredited academic course provision accessible to TYA patients in treatment and within 2 years post completion of treatment.
  • Support TYA cancer patients to attend education and employment in house award ceremonies aimed at highlighting academic achievements.
  • Support TYA cancer patients to attend the Way Forward programme, or other similar Health and Wellbeing Events.
  • Have good awareness of and practice in accordance with the safeguarding policies that exist within the Principal Treatment Centre. Provide guidance and expertise to colleagues with regards to safeguarding policies and practice, supporting the work of the Trusts Lead for Safeguarding and attending the Trusts Safeguarding Committee meetings.
  • Signpost to appropriate charities and organisations, that sit outside of the Principal Treatment Centre, that can help to ensure that TYA cancer patients have access to the most comprehensive education and employment support possible.
