Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a therapy radiographer to join the pre-treatment team at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust Proton Beam Therapy Centre. We are looking for a confident, enthusiastic and ambitious individual with consistent attention to detail, desire for improvement and a strong team ethic.

The post holder will be working with a dynamic multi-professional team, including the principal pre-treatment radiographer, therapy and diagnostic radiographers to develop and shape the proton pre-treatment services as well as developing their own personal skills and knowledge in novel CT scanning techniques and MRI imaging. The candidate will require pre-treatment experience, previous familiarity with MR imaging would be favorable, however, this is not a pre-requisite and extensive training in this field will be provided.

The pre-treatment area and team operates a mould room for the production of relevant immobilisation equipment as well as a CT and MR scanners, which are used almost exclusively to deliver pre-treatment imaging as well as research in the novel use of MRI for radiotherapy.

37.5 hours. One-year fixed term contract. Expected start date May 2025

Main duties of the job

The post holder is required to be responsible for the day to day operational management of the proton pre-treatment areas in accordance with the accredited radiotherapy department quality system and all other professional standards and national guidance. Providing clinical leadership, participating and supervising pre-treatment procedures across mould room, CT and MRI.

The pre- treatment superintendent team lead on the implementation of new techniques, software and technology to provide a safe and well managed transition from the development stage to clinical operation. The pre-treatment service is a key stakeholder in the delivery of several important imaging trials within MRRT and all members of the team are expected to contribute to research.

The Christie is one of Europe's leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

The Proton Beam Therapy Centre is one of two high-energy NHS proton centres in the UK offering proton therapy to patients that would previously have travelled abroad for treatment. Consisting of an extensive multi-professional team the centre is able to treat a complex clinical case mix including a high proportion of paediatric and young adult patients.

The Proton Beam Therapy Centre houses its own dedicated pre-treatment team and equipment which includes state of the art Philips 1.5T MR and Siemens 64 slice dual energy CT scanner. The dedicated scanners housed in the centre are used in order to produce high quality images for the planning of radiotherapy and proton beam therapy.

To supervise, instruct and take part in the use of complex radiotherapy calculations

To supervise, instruct and take part in pre-treatment imaging for radiotherapy planning and virtual simulation planning of patients for radiotherapy and make decisions pertaining to patient care and treatment

Ensuring all errors in pre-treatment areas are reported in a timely manner in accordance with current departmental policy

In depth knowledge of UK radiation legislation IRR 1999 and IR(ME)R 2000 and to act as an expert resource in interpretation of the legislation with regards standard operating procedures and error reporting

Participate in the extended shift system, bank holidays, weekend working and on call
