It is an exciting time to join the haematology pharmacy team. We are integral members of the haematology MDT, and we are expanding our roles in existing services such as the ambulatory care unit, out-patient clinics and peripheral site services, which the post-holder will develop alongside the Lead Pharmacist.
There will be opportunity to gain experience with CAR-T cell therapies and other novel therapies within the rapidly growing ATMP treatment landscape. We are also developing links with the University of Manchester and working on collaborative projects.
We currently have an opportunity for a highly motivated, innovative and enthusiastic specialist haematology pharmacist (band 8a). The post holder will specialise in the haemato-oncology pharmacy services offered within the trust including ambulatory care, autologous and allogeneic HSCT, CAR T therapy, the TYA unit, paediatric proton beam, ward-based services and haemato-oncology at peripheral sites.
Main duties of the job
To deliver and evaluate clinical pharmacy services to haematology cancer patients and teenage/young adult cancer patients in conjunction with the Lead Haematology Pharmacist.
The post holder will ideally possess a NMP qualification and assist in the MDT outpatient clinics. They will play a key role in the future development of services for in-patient, ambulatory and out-patients within the highly regarded haematology and TYA MDT, as well as implementing new initiatives in collaboration with the Lead Haematology Pharmacist and Lead Pharmacist for Clinical Services.
To develop and maintain highly specialist knowledge in medicines used within the Trust especially in relation to haemato-oncology, haematopoietic stem cell transplant and CAR-T/immune-effector cell therapies.
To support and deputise for the Lead Haematology Pharmacist for the safe, efficient and cost-effective use of medicine resources to the designated cancer disease group by the provision of education and training, procedures, policies and guidelines, and medicine usage information.
Although the pharmacy service is based at The Christie Hospital main site, postholders may be required to work at any location across the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cancer Network. The Trust has a flexible working policy and, subject to service commitments, it may also be possible to support an element of working from home

Job responsibilities
- To provide specialist clinical pharmacy services to patients within the haematology division including service provision to haematology ward areas, teenage/young adult unit (TYA), ambulatory care unit, proton beam therapy unit and day case areas, supporting and deputising for the Lead Haematology Pharmacist.
- To provide specialist clinical pharmacy services to the haematology and TYA cancer disease groups in accordance with all departmental, Trust national and international standards, procedures and policies.
- To be responsible for the delivery and development of an out-patient clinical practice, or within the day case setting within the Trust.
- To be trained as an independent prescriber and prescribe to appropriate patients in agreement with the relevant consultants.
- To work closely with and provide pharmaceutical advice to medical staff, other members of the multi-disciplinary team and patients.
- To contribute to the development, of and maintaining the satellite pharmacy provision on the haematology day case and ambulatory care units in conjunction with the Lead Technician and the Lead Haematology Pharmacist.
- To contribute to the oversight of CAR-T therapy delivery
- To contribute to the development of peripheral site services and other initiatives in conjunction with the Lead Haematology Pharmacist
- To develop and maintain drug protocols, treatment guidelines and standard operating procedures both within the clinical pharmacy service and the haematology unit. Reviewing evidence-based guidelines and protocols in conjunction with fellow healthcare professionals, in order to advance the safe, clinical effective and cost efficient use of medicines for patients.
To contribute to the maintenance of local and national databases surrounding medication use related to the haematology service including immunoglobulins.
To ensure compliance with company based patient safety schemes.
- To ensure appropriate use of antibiotics and antifungal agents and contribute to relevant audits as required.
To attend relevant MDT meetings, relevant specialist pharmacy groups and contribute to meetings relevant to the designated disease group as appropriate.
- To liaise with the Lead Haematology Pharmacist, the Director of Pharmacy and the haematology consultants, to forecast drug expenditure and to identify any changes in prescribing practices that may potentially impact on the drugs budget (drug forecasting).
- Gain an understanding of the principle and practice of the Trust's budgeting system and support the management of drug expenditure by clinicians and senior managers.
- Represent the pharmacy service at appropriate clinical unit and divisional meetings on request.
- To monitor and interpret published evidence and computer reports of drug usage, to use this data to report to the lead clinicians and Director of Pharmacy, implementing agreed policies aimed at improving patient outcomes and containing drug expenditure.
- To provide evaluated pharmaceutical information to the Drugs and Therapeutic Committee as requested.
- To support the development of the Electronic Prescribing process across the Trust.
To support the designated cancer disease group through the development and implementation of electronic prescribing for out patients and in patients.
To support prescribing at the individual patient level, contributing to the optimisation of patients drug therapy with due consideration to risk/benefit issues.
To provide pharmaceutical care, contributing to the multi-professional team through ward pharmacy services and attendance on appropriate clinicians ward rounds and meetings.
Facilitate effective communication about relevant pharmacy issues to clinicians and senior managers and the identification of opportunities for development of pharmacy services to match identified services and care needs.
To demonstrate awareness and commitment to the Trusts Clinical Governance Plan.
In conjunction with the Lead Haematology Pharmacist and Principal Pharmacist in Clinical Services, to establish processes for the setting of standards of care, identifying the risks involved and implement changes that need to occur to achieve these.
