We have an exciting opportunity for a Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust
We welcome applications from compassionate, proactive, and enthusiastic individuals with an interest in physiotherapy and oncology.
The apprentice will attend University as part of the Physiotherapy BSc part time course on 2 days per week and work clinically the other 3 days of the week
The successful candidate will rotate between medical and surgery oncology inpatient areas delivering rehabilitation programmes to patients undergoing cancer treatments, symptom control or palliative care under the direction of qualified therapists. They will also contribute to the day to day running of the rehabilitation department.
The successful candidate will also have external placements in other healthcare settings as part of the degree apprenticeship

Main duties of the job
The Physiotherapy Degree Apprentice will work as part of the Rehabilitation Unit team. They will provide planned care to patients undergoing cancer treatment, symptom control, palliative care and rehabilitation and be able to take appropriate action to achieve the planned aims.
Alongside clinical duties, the Physiotherapy apprentices will also be responsible for carrying out regular stock checks and ordering of equipment, including walking aids, splints and collars/braces. They will work alongside other staff members and disciplines to ensure the Rehabilitation Unit remains a safe patient environment.
The Apprentice will be proficient, competent and show initiative seeking out learning opportunities as part of their clinical and non -clinical practice

CLINICAL
- To participate in the Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship and demonstrate skills and knowledge in keeping with acquired knowledge including external placements as part of the requirement of the degree apprenticeship
- To maintain regular and close communication with physiotherapists and team leader.
- To work alongside the MDT to deliver programmes of care and therapy for treatment, as per plan of care determined by physiotherapists and within the Physiotherapy degree apprenticeship
- To develop a rapport with patients and encourage interest and participation in their treatment programme.
- To support and undertake the assessment and management of non-complex patients rehabilitation needs under the direct/indirect supervision of the physiotherapist and as required by the degree apprenticeship This will include initial data collection, assessment of mobility/basic function, implementation of identified treatment plans and information, monitoring/analysis of patients progress, feedback discussion with seniors, provision of written reports and completion of appropriate MDT referrals
- To support and assist the physiotherapists within the medical and surgical teams in the treatment of complex patients
- To assist with implementing exercise programs and progressing/maintaining physical ability to optimise mobility and independence for surgical, medical and long stay inpatients including those undergoing stem-cell transplants.
- To undertake stair assessments with ambulatory patients prior to discharge to ensure safety and report any concerns to seniors
- To identify and supply appropriate walking aids to patients
- To identify appropriate manual handling aids for the safe moving and handling of patients under direct/indirect supervision of senior physiotherapist.
- To provide appropriate post-op exercise and lymphoedema advice/information to surgical patients following surgery.
- To measure and refer out to patients own local wheelchair services for the provision of appropriate wheelchairs and pressure cushions.
- To attend relevant ward MDT meetings, Board rounds and handover to identify appropriate new referrals and provide feedback of follow-up patient progress for the physiotherapy and occupational therapy team
- To update relevant electronic waiting lists and daily worklists to assist with the organization organisation and prioritization prioritisation of the team workload.
- To participate in audit and research projects within their own area of responsibility.
- The post holder will recognize recognise precautionary signs/symptoms and contraindications and will seek the support of an appropriate qualified member of the team when the need arises.
- To participate in a rotation scheme with the band 4 between surgery, and medical oncology wards, which may include haematology oncology and teenage and young adult wards as required and lead on elements of care as outlined in the service objective
