Job summary

The Christie Education Teams deliver a range of services from Clinical Skills Training, Medical and Non-Medical Education Teaching (from work experience, through to Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Consultants), developing and delivering on-line training and managing National and International Conferences and Courses. Our teams also work closely with Service and Clinical Leads to look at the workforce and development needs of all Services across the Trust. The Clinical Fellow post will be an integral part of the Postgraduate and Undergraduate Education Team within Christie Education and you will work closely with our Administration and Faculty. The post is for 40 hours per week and is 80% Education and a minimum 20% Clinical.

The main purpose of the post is to develop accessible multi professional learning programs in Undergraduate Education within the trust. It is further intended that the post-holder will also be involved in other educational activities within Christie Education. The exact nature of such involvement can be discussed and developed based on the post-holders' own interests and prior experience. It is likely to include a combination of ward-based and clinic sessions within oncology/palliative care

Main duties of the job

  1. EDUCATION (80%)

Clinical Fellows in Education will have the opportunity and the expectation to be directly involved in face-to-face teaching.

Post holders will be encouraged to undertake a piece of audit/research during their tenure. Similarly, they will be encouraged to engage in in-house clinical governance projects to improve patient management/experience and/or optimize patient pathways

All Christie Fellows are automatically part of The Christie International Fellowship Programme. Supported by Christie Education, Christie Fellows are given a unique opportunity. All Fellows have the opportunity to spend a minimum of 20% of their time allocated to personal development, with examples such as Quality Improvement (QI), Audit, and Research and Innovation; this will be agreed on an individual basis between the Fellow and their Supervisor. This time will be protected and can be used to focus on whatever your own personal interests are. Working collaboratively with your supervisor you will set individual learning objectives in whichever area you wish, and you will be fully supported in achieving them. In addition to this, each Fellow has access to a personally designed educational experience incorporating clinical practice, research, and education.

This programme will include:

  • An active role in patient care and/or clinical research including:
    • Patient focused multi-disciplinary team meetings (MDTs) and ward rounds
    • Personal clinical or research supervisor support
    • Disease-specific group development meetings
    • Research discussions and journal clubs
    • A unique core education programme focused in your chosen area
    • Access to The Christies Education Events Programme
    • Access to formal postgraduate qualifications in addition to the funded PGCert in Medical Education, if relevant

Christie Fellows can also expect:

  • Support and guidance through the GMC registration process (if needed)
  • A robust induction and orientation programme
  • A fellow buddy schemes
  • A schedule of pastoral activities

In the case of this specific fellowship, the successful applicant will be supported to gain a formal qualification in Healthcare Education (e.g., PGCert in Medical Education) and will be expected to complete this. Options for this are available locally via The University of Manchester or Edge Hill University, but other preferences will be considered..

They will also be provided mentorship in leadership by the Postgraduate and Undergraduate Education team, encouraged to take on suitable managerial and administrative responsibilities and be supported to further develop their interest in Clinical Education.

Whilst this post is not recognised for training, the appointee will also be allocated a Clinical Supervisor and an Educational Supervisor and have access to the junior doctor in-house teaching and training programme. There are weekly teaching sessions which the post holder will be expected to attend on a regular basis. There is also a weekly feedback session with senior medical staff to discuss clinical issues. Clinical Fellows will also be encouraged to attend various educational lectures, meeting, and seminars.

Individual appraisal will be carried in conjunction with the Educational Supervisor. Mentorship opportunities and career guidance will also be available. The aim would be for the post holder to sufficiently improve their portfolio enabling them to pursue roles Clinical Education and/or to compete nationally for medical/ clinical oncology or palliative medicine specialty rotations. The experience can also be useful for those wishing to pursue GP training schemes / non oncology hospital specialties.

There is an excellent medical library with good information technology facilities on site. In addition, there are strong links with the Postgraduate Centres at the nearby Manchester University Hospitals Foundation Trust.

Clinical Fellows will be able to apply for leave and funding for approved courses of study (including attendance at examinations). It is expected that the Fellow may wish to obtain educational qualifications of an appropriate level and CPD in the field of medical education.
