Job summary

The Physiotherapy COMO team Lead will provide clinical leadership for the Clinical & Medical Oncology service and will have line management responsibility for the small team. This includes supporting staff development, clinical teaching of staff and undergraduates who are on placement and service and policy development. You will also be responsible for managing the team's performance and for ensuring that service and team objectives are met.

The postholder will also have responsibility for a clinical case load and will be responsible for delivering highly specialisised assessment and treatment for individuals, who are undergoing cancer treatment.

You will have opportunity to contribute, facilitate, design and lead quality improvement projects with the aim of enhancing and promoting the value of the Physiotherapy role within cancer care.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will lead the Physiotherapy clinical & medical oncology service to deliver high quality assessment and intervention to ensure effective and patient centred treatments. The post holder must communicate effectively with patients, carers and work collaboratively with colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure effective rehabilitation and safe discharge planning

They will be responsible for:

  • Providing day to day management of the staff members of the physiotherapy medical and clinical oncology in-patient team.
  • Effectively managing clinical time versus managerial responsibilities.
  • To work autonomously providing specialist assessment, interventions and advice to patients in the Inpatient adult service
  • Provide line management to staff.
  • Service evaluation and service development.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in clinical audit, CPD and the In-service training rota, and will be required to complete the relevant mandatory training.

The post holder will be required to participate in the evening and weekend Respiratory on call rota and may also be required to work flexibly including weekend working and bank holidays

Clinical

  1. To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own clinical caseload and to manage the clinical risk within own caseload.
  2. To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive and timely patient treatment records in accordance with Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and local service standards of practice.
  3. To undertake specialist, advanced assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi pathologies; to use advanced clinical reasoning, analytical and investigative skills and manual assessment techniques to interpret clinical and non -clinical facts in order to provide efficacious patient centered interventions
  4. To formulate and deliver an individual physiotherapy treatment programme based on a high level of knowledge of evidence- based practice and treatment options

To complete equipment competency training in order to demonstrate responsibility for the safe and competent use of all equipment, patient appliances, aids used during the therapeutic episode, and, to be responsible for the safe and competent use of equipment by patients, and staff and students who are under supervision.
  13. To take additional responsibility (in addition to existing responsibilities and caseload) from other senior staff e.g. during unforeseen or sudden absence of other staff within team.
  14. To represent the Physiotherapy Service and /or individual patients at multiprofessional team meetings, to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated multiprofessional service, this will include discussion of patient care, patient progress and involvement in discharge planning.
  15. To be an active member of the physiotherapy on-call emergency respiratory rota.
