Job summary
Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellow post in Interventional Radiology and Cancer Imaging, for a period of 12 months. It is anticipated that the fellowship will start in August/September 2023 and end in August/September 2024. Applicants should hold full GMC registration.
The department has posts for up to four fellows across cross-sectional imaging and interventional radiology (usually 3 cross-sectional posts, 1 interventional post). You will also be joining a team comprised of 24 consultants, with other existing Consultant vacancies. We are also a training department, with places for up to 5 rotational trainees at any given time.
A fixed salary of £50,000 p.a. is currently payable. There is opportunity to supplement income by undertaking additional, paid cross-sectional imaging sessions.
Applicants should have completed their general radiological training requirements, obtained FRCR and be within 6 months of CCST or post CCST.
Main duties of the job
The post is principally to obtain specific education and training in interventional procedures as well as cancer imaging. It is provisionally split into 32 hours per week of direct clinical care (including Interventional Radiology alongside CT and MR onco-radiology) with 8 hours of research and administration. There are a wide variety of specialist MDTs, with sub-specialty interests welcomed.
Commonly performed procedures include, but are not limited to: nutritional support procedures, vascular support procedures, stenting of the GI tract, percutaneous liver intervention (PTC, RFA), percutaneous genito-urinary intervention, venous intervention (SVC, IVC, Varicocoeles) symptomatic tumour embolisations, PAE, Chemo-embolisation and Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT).
The Christie is a leading centre for enteric intervention, liver intervention, and transradial access, hosting a number of international courses. The successful candidate will obtain experience in a wide range of interventional procedures with a view to becoming an independent operator.

This post is designed to provide education and training in interventional procedures and cancer imaging. The post holder will be closely supervised during interventional procedures, and supported in producing imaging reports and in further enhancing their involvement with specialist MDTs.
The post holders routine clinical work will initially be closely supervised but they will practice increasingly independently as his/her experience develops during the year. In turn, the post holder will be able to supervise Junior Radiologists as time and expertise progress.
There is a significant proportion of time dedicated to research and audit, and the successful candidate is expected to contribute to projects leading to scientific publications, as well as presentations at national and international meetings.
The department consists of 24 consultants; 3 clinical fellows in Oncology Imaging; 1 clinical fellow in Interventional Radiology and (up to) 5 Specialist Trainees in clinical radiology.
The Clinical Director has professional responsibility for medical staff and clinical responsibility for the Radiology service. He is supported by lead consultants in CT, MR, US, Interventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, General Radiology, Clinical Audit and Information Technology and by the clinical tutors for the specialist trainees and fellows.
Teaching Commitment:
The department is active in teaching radiology trainees on the North-West training scheme, with further commitments to national and regional radiology teaching. Medical student, FY/CMT and non-radiology ST-teaching is also supported. The post holder will undertake lectures and tutorials to medical and non-medical staff in collaboration with and independent of colleagues.
Multi-disciplinary team meetings:
The consultant radiologists support the provision of around 25 separate MDT meetings. The post holder will be expected to participate in MDTs, with subspecialist interests accommodated.
Clinical Governance:
The post-holder will be expected to participate in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining and improving protocols, the consent process, discrepancy reporting, guidelines and clinical audit in conjunction with the other staff in the department. In addition, opportunities will exist to get involved with national audit programmes of the relevant specialist societies
Office and Secretarial:
The Trust will provide shared office accommodation with other radiology trainees and fellows. Secretarial support is shared between consultants and trainees / fellows.
Continuing Professional Development
The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and professional colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
The post holder will undertake CPD in line with the recommendations of the Royal College of Radiologists. They will make appropriate arrangements for study leave with colleagues and non-medical staff. Study leave will be limited to 10 days per year, but flexible working will be considered.
