We are looking for a knowledgeable, dedicated, and forward-thinking individual for this exciting role as the operational lead for the nursing and medical review teams, Day unit and paediatric clinics in the Proton beam therapy (PBT) centre as well as professional lead for paediatric nursing across the Division and Trust. Applicants should be innovative and dynamic practitioners committed to improving the paediatric patient experience in a Trust which is not a primary paediatric hospital.

The individual appointed to this role will lead a team providing management and treatment of paediatric patients undergoing proton beam therapy (PBT) and radiotherapy and as such should possess excellent clinical and demonstrable leadership skills. They will practice autonomously within their professional boundaries liaising closely with medical colleagues including medical oncologists, clinical oncologists, and anaesthetists from The Christie and Royal Manchester Children's Hospital to ensure safe care and treatment of the PBT paediatric patients.

Applicants need to be proactive individuals that can interact and contribute to a team environment with experience of working alongside a broad range of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) of all bandings and grades.

Main duties of the job

This post holder will act as operational lead as well as a clinical member of the PBT Paediatric medical review team, required to participate in the direct clinical management of paediatric and TYA patients. This includes history taking, systematic physical examination, formulating clinical management plans, prescribing appropriate treatment, and managing medical care of paediatric patients receiving radiotherapy including post anaesthetic patients who require appropriate discharge. The post holder will also act as operational lead for the paediatric day unit, staffed by paediatric nurses managing and caring for all paediatric patients within the PBT service including a number of post anaesthetic cases daily. Importantly, as a key member of the PBT senior team they will have a key role in operational management of the wider PBT clinical service

In addition to the responsibilities in PBT the post holder will act as the professional lead for paediatric nursing care across the Division and Trust, providing visible leadership across paediatric PBT, radiotherapy and oncology clinical service setting, and will be required to develop and maintain advanced paediatric life support skills, provide a presence within the emergency team as required in order to respond and assist on paediatric crash calls acting as the paediatric representative for the Trust resuscitation and deteriorating patient committee

About us

This is a unique role as part of the nursing and leadership team at The Christie, one of Europe's leading cancer centres and one of only two high-energy NHS proton centres in the UK. As such this is a role, working in a highly specialised service alongside an extensive multi-professional team able to treat a complex clinical case mix including a high proportion of paediatric and young adult patients. This role will enable the post holder the opportunity to contribute not only to the continuous development of a novel national service but also provide exposure to leadership on a divisional and trust level as lead paediatric nurse.

The PBT centre is a day case, outpatient service and operates routinely Monday-Friday with occasional planned weekend working. Individuals are required to work shift patterns to ensure adequate cover of the service across the day which operates from early morning-evenings. The PBT service is committed in supporting staff to find ways in which they can work flexibly to find an appropriate work life balance.

As a novel and highly specialised service there is extensive opportunity to continually develop within this role and ample funding is available for ongoing professional development of all post holders as well as opportunities to attend relevant conferences as a representative of the profession, department and Trust. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact the service to discuss the benefits and opportunities.
