Junior Clinical Fellow in Surgery
This job is now closed
Job summary
This Junior Surgical Fellow (JSF) post is suitable for candidates who are post F2 level or above and who are interested in pursuing a career in surgery, developing their clinical and surgical skills and gaining a unique experience in the surgical management of a wide range of malignancies in one of Europe's largest comprehensive cancer centres.
They will gain exposure to inpatient and outpatient care; urgent/emergency care, peri-operative management, and be supported to gain a good grounding in basic and intermediate surgical skills and exposure to minimally invasive surgery and to complex surgery where desired.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in a busy tertiary centre, with unlimited opportunities to learn about modern cancer management in the field of surgery, including state of the art techniques such as robotic surgery and cytoreductive surgery with heated intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).
The surgical experience offered at the Christie will be invaluable when applying for higher grade training posts in any surgical sub-specialty.
This post is designed to provide a parallel training experience. Although it is not formally recognised as a training post, it will deliver a similar experience, with the same training and learning opportunities and educational supervision offered to those in a CT 1/2 post. It is ideally suited to provide a bridge to core and speciality training.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be able to rotate through all four surgical oncology specialties at the Christie (urology, gynae-oncology, plastic surgery and colorectal surgery), depending on the post holders personal interests. Core hours of cover will be 8-4pm, Monday to Friday. The post does not have an on call commitment.
The JSF will be expected to play a role in clinical audit, governance, teaching and learning. For interested individuals there are opportunities to be involved in the Christie's significant research portfolio. All junior team members are encouraged to submit project/audit reports to local, regional, national and international meetings.
The role will be responsible for: Clinical duties and opportunities
- Management of acute and chronically ill surgical patients and diagnostic testing
- Assessment of all patients arriving for elective admission
- Effective communication skills and counselling including skills in breaking bad news
- Coordinating treatment and investigative procedures
- Discharge planning
- Prescribing and administering drugs
- Undertake pre-operative preparation / post-operative care for patients
- Attendance in surgical clinics and in theatre
- Participation in regular audit, MDT and ongoing departmental research
- May be required to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultants, where predictable with senior and junior colleagues.
About us
Each surgical speciality provides a tertiary referral service, providing a regional service in soft tissue sarcomas and skin cancers, complex pelvic tumours, anal cancers, penile and testicular tumours, complex renal tumours and advanced gynaecological tumours. The department is unique in the degree of multi-disciplinary surgery performed.
We are one of only two nationally commissioned hospitals in the country offering surgical treatment for patients with pseudomyxoma and peritoneal metastases of colorectal origin. We provide cytoreductive surgery with heated intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for appendix tumours, pseudomyxoma peritoneii (PMP) and colorectal cancer.
In 2007 we installed the first Da Vinci operating robot in the North West and in 2015 expanded our robotic program with the purchase of 2 Da Vinci Si robots to replace the original. We currently robotically treat prostate, renal (partial nephrectomy), rectal, gynae and uterine cancers, as well as selected joint operations for complex cases.
Place of work:
The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide input to inpatient wards (38 beds), an Oncology Critical Care Unit, 5 operating theatres, and the Integrated Procedures Unit. They are mainly based on ward 10 and will be rotating with all 4 specialities. The will be attending the clinics and theatres during their tenure. They will attend the rounds and MDT's to progress through their career.
