Job summary

It will provide the successful applicant with the opportunity to gain experience of working in the regional Principal Treatment Centre for Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) oncology/haematology, as well as experience in working within a Tertiary referral Haematology/bone marrow transplant unit. The purpose of the post is to provide excellent medical cover to TYA Oncology and TYA/adult Haematology patients being treated within the Palatine treatment Centre at The Christie Hospital. Flexible working and cross-cover with existing Palatine Ward CMT roles will be a requirement within this post, as will collaborative working with wider TYA and Haematology teams.

The role will be responsible for:

  • Providing clinical cover for both TYA patients, and adult Haematology patients on Palatine Ward - in conjunction with the existing ward CMT team, with robust supervision from TYA oncology Senior Clinical Fellow/Haematology registrar and Oncology/Haematology consultants as required
  • Alongside senior clinical team, providing clinical cover / continuity for patients on Palatine ward on nominal CMT training days
  • Providing resilience/cross cover for TYA day unit (YOU) and patient issues arising on ambulatory care when required

Main duties of the job

The JOF will join the existing Palatine ward TYA and Haematology clinical teams to support the both services in ensuring that all patients on the 31 bedded-ward have robust daily clinical cover.

Existing ward teams include 2 Haematology ST doctors, 1 TYA Oncology Senior clinical fellow, and 3 x ward-based CMTs. The Haematology service is supported by an attending consultant, with 2 scheduled consultant ward rounds per week and daily consultant level input as required. The TYA medical oncology service has 1 scheduled consultant ward round per week, with additional consultant level input as required. In addition to the TYA Oncology Senior Clinical Fellow based on Palatine ward, the TYA oncology service is also supported by the Adult medical oncology registrar on an as-required basis.

The TYA day unit (YOU) is comprised of 4 chairs and 2 beds. The unit supports TYA patients attending for elective out-patient chemotherapy or supportive care but will also be an assessment point for TYA patients attending on an as-required basis for clinical review due to specific patient/staff concerns, and for patients who require assessment/clerking prior to being admitted to Palatine ward for further treatment. It is currently supported by 1 x Haematology Senior Clinical Fellow, and the TYA Oncology Senior Clinical Fellow. There may be an ad-hoc requirement for the JOF to provide additional cover to this service, and also to the nurse-led ambulatory care unit on an as-required basis.
