Clinical Research International Fellowship in the Department of Medical Oncology
This Fellowship will allow a senior medical trainee to work within the Melanoma disease-related group at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. This coordinated research expansion plan sits under the umbrella of the Systemic Therapy Research Group, which aims to substantially increase research output within the Department of Medical Oncology, through increased delivery of innovative investigator-led studies driven by The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. A key part of this process is to encourage education and empowerment of research staff at all levels, which includes training the next generation of cancer research leaders.
Main duties of the job
This position is suitable for an enthusiastic and research-motivated applicant with a Medical degree, who is pursuing a career in Medical Oncology and have an interest in gaining further research and clinical trial experience in the Melanoma disease group area.
The successful candidates must hold full General Medical Council (GMC) registration and have International English Language Testing System (IELTS) proficiency at the time of post commencement, as appropriate. The Fellowship is a one to two-year, full-time position to support clinical research and to provide specialist experience and training for the successful applicant.
Salary will be on the Specialist Registrar scale, starting salary within range £33,128 - £43,828 per annum, dependent on experience and qualifications. There is no on-call commitment attached to these post.

- ROLE: The successful candidate will be recruited as a Senior / Clinical Fellow in the Experimental Cancer Medicine Team
- RESEARCH: A diverse range of clinical research trials are in progress and, following training, the post holder will be expected to participate in these studies as a co-/sub-investigator. These include Phase I trials of small molecule inhibitors, next-generation chemotherapy trials, combination / multi-modality Phase I trials, molecular characterisation / translational studies.
The post holder will be involved in managing all aspects of trial patients, across a diverse range of solid tumours, through new patient consultation, consent and screening patients and reviewing patients at follow-up appointments. Primarily, patients are seen in the outpatient setting but with some inpatient cover. The appointee is required to attend 5 trial outpatient clinics per week (see indicative timetable).
The post holder will be expected to attend Safety Review Committee meetings (usually remotely) to discuss trial patients. This will involve close liaison with the trial Principal Investigators, referring consultant body across the Trust and other members of the team. In addition, the post-holder will interface with external stakeholders such as CROs and pharmaceutical sponsors.
- PROTOCOLS: The post holder will be expected to undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients. The appointee will be encouraged to harness opportunities to be involved in the development and planning of new studies.
- Professional Development: The Senior Clinical Fellow will maintain a level of continuing professional development consistent with the recommendations of the Royal College of Physicians. Appropriate arrangements for study leave will be made in conjunction with colleagues. There is the potential to present research work and the post holder will be expected to be involved in audit, writing papers and reviews. The post holder will also be required to undergo an annual appraisal. The post holder will be eligible to enroll on the MRes in Experimental Cancer Medicine to receive formal training in experimental therapeutics
