Job summary
This post is primarily concerned with providing repair, calibration and maintenance to a wide range of highly complex high capital value, medical equipment used for clinical radiotherapy treatments.
The role of the post holder is to provide specialist support to safety critical radiotherapy equipment. The post holder ensures that radiotherapy equipment operates effectively and safely with a minimum of downtime. Clinical equipment incorporates electrical, electronic and mechanical components and computer software and hardware.
The post holder liaises with clinical and scientific staff to identify faults and repair equipment, including working in clinical areas and working with equipment manufacturers as appropriate
The NHS is moving towards a 24/7 working pattern so flexibility will be required.
Main duties of the job
You will have knowledge of electronic / electrical engineering & join a team of specialist engineers providing a comprehensive repair, maintenance & development service to the Christie Photon Beam. We are looking for individuals who may have limited experience in radiotherapy / engineering. Full manufacturer training will be provided to enable the individuals to work independently.
You will have/develop skills in the following areas: high power RF microwave and x-ray generation, high vacuum systems, motor speed control, electronic position sensing & control, data acquisition and display, advanced digital imaging, laser alignment, computer control, networking & mechanical engineering. Duties will involve quality control measurements, fault finding, repairs & planned maintenance of complex radiotherapy equipment, & other associated equipment e.g. MR / CT.

Duties and Responsibilities
General
- Work as part of multidisciplinary teams to support and develop the clinical radiotherapy service.
- Provide technical advice to clinical and other staff groups as required.
- The Engineer will be required to work within the framework of the ISO 9001Radiotherapy Quality System.
- Requirement where necessary for frequent work out of hours to minimize interruption to clinical service. There will also be requirement to work bank holidays and weekends as necessary.
- Participate in the extended shift system
- Repair of safety critical complex medical equipment. Good analysis and diagnostic skills required.
- Involved in commenting on interdepartmental procedures and work instructions for the physics group and may also propose changes to current procedures.
- To participate in the physics quality control of the radiotherapy equipment.
- Will be expected to work at any of the Christie sites at short notice.
- Could be based at any of the Christie sites
- Participate on an on-call rota as required.
Technical Support for Clinical Radiotherapy Treatment equipment
- Carry out repair, calibration and safety testing of highly complex Radiotherapy equipment. Makes decisions to take safety critical equipment out of clinical use.
- The running up and preparation of radiotherapy equipment for clinical use and the closing down of equipment on completion of use.
- To carry out and record approved modifications to radiotherapy equipment.
- To maintain proper records of all work carried out on the radiotherapy equipment
- Performs regular high precision machine quality control checks, measurements and associated adjustments to fractional mm accuracy.
- Will have to work on radiotherapy equipment whilst patient is in the treatment room, or on the treatment couch.
- To ensure that all radiotherapy equipment works to manufacturers specification.
- To maintain specialist equipment technical records and reports for the organization.
Technical support for Medical Devices
- To provide specialist technical support to X-ray and MR imaging systems, axis lasers and all peripherals used on radiotherapy/diagnostic equipment
- The maintenance of all test, measurement and service instruments and equipment including dose measurement instruments.
- To participate in the development and construction of instrumentation and equipment to support the service.
- Will work as part of the clinical technical services group maintaining other medical devices
Clinical Networking
- To assist in the technical support of clinical IT networks supporting radiotherapy and diagnostic equipment
- To write software as necessary for role of the position
- Will work on R&V solutions and liaise with appropriate manufacturer to maintain clinical uptime
Health and Safety
- Will work daily in potentially hazardous situations with ionizing radiation, including high voltage electricity, heavy equipment and industrial gases in confined spaces with responsibility for safety of self and others.
Organizational
- Prioritize and organize allocated work in accordance with section policies and competing service demands. Proposes changes to own working practices and procedures. This will involve daily interruptions to own work and others in group.
- To assist with service visits by outside engineers and contractors.
Teaching, training and research

- May be involved in the development of training to less experienced engineers within multidisciplinary team.
- Participate in professional development of own staff group and others. This involves presentations, seminars and group demonstrations
- Participate in the research and development work carried out by the radiation physics group.
- Will be expected to follow project management arrangements to report on status of projects e.g. gantt charts etc
- The Engineer will be required to attend training courses which will occasionally involve periods away from home or overseas.
- Training of radiographers, dosimetrists and clinical scientists
- Will be expected to keep abreast of technical developments. Enrol in Continuing Professional Development Programs. Attend suitable seminars and courses as part of personal development and to further the work of the department.
- Participate in the IPEM training scheme, for self and others.
- Will participate in IPEM / MSC training scheme which may involve lecturing at higher education sites
