Job summary

Applications are invited to join our forward-thinking, friendly department in Critical Care with the option of an associated specialty in either Anaesthesia, Acute Medicine, or Respiratory Medicine at Mid-Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a 12 month fixed term post.

This post is be based at Leighton Hospital, Crewe and the successful applicant will work between the Critical Care Unit and the associated Specialty Area.

Applicants must have full registration with the GMC including a License to Practice and be on the Specialist Register, or be within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training in both specialties.

The post is offered based on 10 Programmed Activities per week, however the Trust would welcome discussion with individuals looking for a more flexible working pattern to support a different work life balance.

Main duties of the job

This is a fabulous opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic doctor to join the teams to enhance links and share expertise across specialties. The post's emphasis for clinical work will be on Adult Critical Care and either Acute Medicine, Respiratory Medicine or Anaesthesia. On-call out of hours provision will be provided in Adult Critical Care.

The successful candidate will join the existing team of seven Critical Care Consultants providing medical cover for an eleven bedded Critical Care Unit. The Consultant body work closely together and act as a very supportive group with a determined ethos.

This exciting opportunity also allows the successful candidate to widen their interest in one of the specified specialty areas, alongside dedicated teams of consultants who are focused on improving outcomes and patient experience.

The successful applicant will also contribute to the Critical Care Consultant on-call rota on a 1:8 basis.

The post involves a 1:8 Consultant of the week role on Critical Care plus attendance at the weekly MDT meeting, where we have strong links with radiology, microbiology and the respiratory medical team as well as the wider allied health professional team.

The department forms part of the Health Education England NW (Mersey) training rotation and we have 10 anaesthetic/ACCS trainees from CT1 to ST3+ level.

We also have 13 specialty doctors/clinical fellows, 2 Advanced Critical Care Practitioners (ACCPs), and 2 ACCPs in training.

In addition, the department has a dynamic and progressive outreach team which has recently expanded as a 24/7 service led by a band 8 senior nurse and supported by the consultant body.

There is a monthly follow-up clinic, journal club and liaison meetings with the Emergency Department. The Unit has been actively involved in recruitment for trials including, most recently, the Recovery-RS trial.

Within the Critical department we have a Course Director for BASICS (the regional core trainee teaching programme), a Chair of a regional Critical Care Group and a Course Director for the regional obstetrics anaesthetic course (EASE) which is run at the Trust.
