Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated band 7 pharmacist to join the clinical oncology/ haematology pharmacy team at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust. The team provides a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to oncology/haematology patients (children and young people).

This role is ideal for a band 6 or 7 pharmacist who wants to further develop their clinical skills with support from experienced pharmacists. Paediatric hospital pharmacy or oncology/haematology experience is desirable but not essential as extensive training will be provided.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to oncology/haematology patients including Systemic Anticancer Chemotherapy (SACT) prescription verification and clinical monitoring.
  • Provide professional and clinical supervision in the satellite oncology/haematology pharmacy dispensary.
  • Support the operation and development of the Telephone Home Maintenance service
  • Provide highly specialised paediatric drug therapy advice to patients/carers, medical and nursing staff and other healthcare professionals
  • Provide teaching to pharmacy, nursing and medical staff in specialist areas of clinical practice and supervises less experienced band 6 pharmacists & students.
  • Deputise for band 8a advanced pharmacists

About us

Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust is one of the biggest and busiest children's hospitals in Europe. Our state-of-the-art hospital opened in October 2015.

We have specialist pharmacists embedded within clinical teams as well as an Aseptic Unit, busy out-patient and in-patient dispensaries, medicines information unit and a paediatric focused purchasing.

The Oncology/Haematology Unit is the Principal Treatment Centre for children and young people with cancer from Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales and the Isle of Man. The centre recruits to national and international clinical trials and is a recognised ECMC and ITCC centre for early phase studies.

Our clinical oncology/haematology pharmacy team are an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team. The team comprises of pharmacists, a technician and an ATO based on the Oncology/Haematology Unit. The post holder will join this friendly, dedicated, team in the provision of a comprehensive pharmacy service to patients.

The successful candidate will be given a full induction and the pharmacy department supports development; this may include advanced clinical skills, good clinical practice and clinical trials accreditation, an understanding of drug commissioning. These highly desirable skills will be transferrable to other areas of pharmacy practice.
