Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a Biomedical Associate Practitionerspecialising in Haematology and Blood Transfusion to join our team.

The post holder will work closely with the Lead Biomedical Scientist and Senior Biomedical Scientists to provide a 24/7 laboratory service to the Trust and its users.

The department is well equipped with Sysmex XN2000, Sysmex CS2400, Grifols Erytra, Beckman Coulter Navios, Tosoh G8 and Meditech computer system.

The Haematology department has UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation and is accredited for training with the IBMS.

We are looking for an individual who is enthusiastic to join a dedicated team providing a high-quality service.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an individual who is motivated and enthusiastic to join a dedicated team providing a high-quality service.

The post holder will preferably have practical and theoretical knowledge of laboratory haematology, coagulation and blood transfusion.

The department provides a full diagnostic paediatric Haematology and Blood Transfusion service.

The Haematology department has UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation and is accredited for training with the IBMS.

Planning and organising skills

  • To monitor levels of reagents and consumable items informing a senior member of staff when stocks are running low.
  • To comply with Trust and Departmental Health and Safety policies, including reporting of all accidents, incidents, hazards and defects as soon as possible.
  • To ensure all equipment and facilities provided by the department are used in a proper and safe manner.
  • To carry out appropriate maintenance and quality control procedures including departmental audits.

Training

  • To complete a work-based training programme and complete competency log for all procedures carried out.
  • To undergo statuary and mandatory training in line with Trust Policy.
  • To participate in annual performance review including the development of a Personal Development Plan (PDP).
  • To participate in the induction and orientation of staff, students and visitors.
  • Assisting with training of MLA staff, students and unqualified staff.

Departmental specific duties

  • Processing, referral and storage of a variety of biological specimens that may contain high risk micro-organisms.
  • To undertake duties appropriate to the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) staff as required.
  • To prioritise and manage own work schedule on a day-to-day basis.
  • To maintain quality of work and maintenance of the Quality system within the Department and perform internal quality control procedures.
  • To contribute to and enable the fulfilment of Departmental, Laboratory Medicine and Trust objectives and achievements of UKAS ISO :15189 and other standards as required.
  • To supervise and train MLA staff where appropriate.
  • To demonstrate self-directed development and undertake CPD.
  • To participate in the training of work experience students when required.
