Job summary

Alder Hey are seeking an Interim Associate Director (AD) of Strategy and Partnerships who wants to make a positive difference for children and young people's outcomes.

This post is for a fixed term of 12 months at 0.6WTE, to cover maternity leave from May 2024 to May 2025. Candidates can be considered on a secondment arrangement subject to relevant agreements.

Main duties of the job

Working to the Chief Strategy and Partnerships Officer, the AD for Strategy and Partnerships will support the Trust's strategic plan, as well as proactively lead and contribute to transformational change for example at a Cheshire and Merseyside and a North-West level. The post holder be motivated to enhance the Trust's reputation as both a provider of outstanding services, and as an excellent partner. They will support the development of a systematic plan for strategic commissioning and engagement and play an active role in the delivery of the approach.

The right candidate will be a highly skilled operator, with the specialist relationships, skills, and experience to contribute to and influence partnership working locally and regionally, identifying opportunities for shared working to achieve successful outcomes, and assist in ensuring delivery of what is required within the Trust. The post holder will identify and exploit opportunities for partnership and / or system working and business development and be responsible for scanning the horizon for potential business opportunities, identifying potential areas of growth and development, and coordinating and preparing bids for new business, using internal and external data sources to develop intelligence. The post holder will have line management responsibility for related services.

System Working

  • Act as a lead convener and strategic facilitator in the system under the direction of the Chief Strategy & Partnerships Officer
  • Be an externally visible senior leader responsible for delivery of major transformational change across different geographies, demonstrating the Trusts commitment to operate on behalf of the system
  • Influence strategic commissioning for the benefit of CYP population health and the Trust
  • Develop and deliver relevant system strategy and transformation programmes which support system financial sustainability and optimize investment into children and young peoples services
  • As directed, work with senior leaders across the system to craft the emerging health and care system architecture and governance for CYP
  • Lead and manage a system portfolio of e.g. Alliances, Joint Services, Networks

Leadership and Management

  • Lead on the strategic aspects of business development in conjunction with the Finance Business Development function; work with divisions and corporate leads to assign appropriate leadership to the associated programmes of work required to achieve and implement them.
  • Be an active member of the Trusts Senior Leadership Team, flexible in style and approach, working with colleagues to create a positive and engaging culture
  • Operate effectively in a flexible, continuously highly complex and demanding environment, and proactively engage with key

  • Manage potentially contentious situations with staff and stakeholders within change programmes for successful outcomes, often dealing with highly complex and conflicting issues internally and with stakeholders
  • Employ effective communication, negotiation and influencing skills to enable stakeholder relationships, and to deliver objectives over the duration of projects/programmes. This will require highly tuned emotional intelligence, both in terms of reading others, and in terms of having a good awareness of your own personal impact.
  • Represent the Trust, as directed, in sensitive and political situations, occasionally with high-level audiences.
  • Deputise for the Chief Strategy & Partnerships Officer (CSPO) in internal Trust and external meetings, at Committee level and as directed Trust Board level; effectively representing the CSPO and ensure the strategic needs of the organisation, as well as children and young people and the Alder Hey footprint, are considered in all decisions made.
  • Deputise for the CSPO in all external meetings, including Place based Boards, and regional (Cheshire and Merseyside, North West) strategy meetings
  • Regularly present highly complex and sensitive information, making recommendations for approval.
  • Produce regular executive reports and Trust Board reports.
  • Bring to meetings alternative thinking and ideas with the ability to influence and challenge appropriately and effectively at an executive level both within the Trust and with external partners and stakeholders.

  • As directed, develop and shape Vision 2030, our needs-based strategy, employing transformational change and partnership deployment
  • Provide in depth analysis, comparison, and interpretation of highly complex data sets from a number of information sources to inform strategic development.
  • Support the identification of opportunities for collaboration across and beyond the Trust, considering potential for integrated care and provision of seamless pathways of care for children, young people and their families.
  • Horizon scan emerging national and local policies, strategies, and developments, working in harmony with key roles such as Policy Lead / Advisor to the CEO, translating as appropriate to inform strategic development.
  • Co-designing a systematic approach to Horizon scanning with CSPO, and overseeing its implementation
  • Work with Divisions to enable the success of cross organisational programmes and projects.
  • Lead on specific projects or programmes of work on behalf of the Trust as directed.
  • Work jointly with the Communications & Marketing Dept. to develop communications appropriate for rolling out Trust Strategy
