Job summary
We welcome applications for a 10PA (8.5 PA Direct clinical care and 1.5 PA supporting professional activities) substantive Consultant Cleft Surgeon, based in the Department of cleft lip & palate surgery at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust. This is a replacement position due to retirement of a senior colleague.
The successful applicant would join the cleft lip and palate team and work as part of the North West, North Wales & Isle of Man Cleft lip and palate network.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will be part of a team of four designated primary cleft surgeons - two based in Manchester and two based in Liverpool.
The majority of programmed activities will be carried out at Alder Hey Hospital, but the appointee will also provide an outreach service to Lancashire (Royal Preston Hospital) with a facility to treat adult patients with clefts at Aintree University Hospital, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The other surgical 2.75 PAs will be worked at Aintree University Hospitals NHS Trust (for a Maxillofacial surgeon) or at Alder Hey Children's Hospital NHS Trust (for a Plastic surgeon). The appointee will also undertake on call duties. If a maxillofacial surgeon is appointed to the post, they will join the regional OMFS on call service based at Aintree University Hospital (1:14) which also includes trauma consultant of the week duties. If a Plastic surgeon is appointed, they will join the paediatric plastic surgery & burns on call rota at Alder Hey Children's Hospital (1:6).

Alder Hey Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of Europe's biggest and busiest children's hospitals providing care for over 200,000 children and young people each year. It is one of only four stand alone peadiatric trusts in the UK and is staffed by 2800 employees. Alder Hey offers 20 specialist services including being the designated supra regional centre for Craniofacial Surgery and a centre of Excellence for Paediatric Oncology, Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Neurology and Orthopaedics. Alder Hey serves not only the children of Liverpool but is the tertiary referral centre for children of Merseyside, Cheshire, parts of Lancashire, Shropshire and North Wales for many sub-specialties of paediatrics. The trust provides a range of community services including school nursing, home carers and a child development centre. The hospital has over 300 beds, including day beds for surgery, a medical day care unit and Emergency Decision Unit.
