Job summary

The post holder carries responsibility and accountability for the health care management of their patient group, in collaboration with senior nurses and Team Leaders. The band 5 staff nurse will be responsible for assessing, developing, implementing and evaluating family centred programmes of care.

Clinical ResponsibilitiesMaintain high standards of nursing care and promote an environment suitable for the care of children, ensuring that all planned carefully reflects latest research developments. To assess, develop, implement and evaluate family centred programmes of care in partnership with colleagues or senior staff and ultimately without direct supervision. Actively participate in mentorship for junior staff and students and participate in clinical supervision. Ensure child protection issues are acted upon promptly and appropriately. Continuously develop the clinical role in order to be able to work independently, anticipate care needs of patients and actively manage their journey through the Trust. This includes being able to work independently or as part of a team in potentially stressful, distressing or emotional circumstances including life support and assessment. To extend and expand nursing roles within the nurses competence, and with appropriate training as guided by local and departmental policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job

ManagementAim to promote high moral within the nursing team by good staff relationships and clear lines of communication. Monitor effective use of resources, in collaboration with colleagues. Maintain a safe working environment. Organise and manage effectively designated area in liaison with shift leader. Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records in accordance with the NMC and Trust guidelines. Record and report accidents /incidents to patients or staff in accordance to Trust guidelines and policy. Work in collaboration with the A&E team to ensure that the local and national targets for emergency care are achieved.CommunicationTo promote an effective communication system, both written and verbal, which ensures that a team approach to family centred care is encouraged and adopted. Enter appropriate data into the HISS ( Meditech ) in a timely manner and ensure all nurse led screens are completed. Participate in relevant departmental meetings and represent the department at Trust wide meetings when appropriate, disseminating information as appropriate. Act in a way to promote confidentiality, dignity and trust of patients, parents, carers and other staff members. For newly qualified nurses we offer a standard organisation induction, with an agreed supervisory period, to allow us to ensure you can be provided with all required information and training required. We have practice educators who are ward based, and will support you during your transition into the qualified nurse role, which will be supported by undertaking the Trust preceptorship programme. We offer a rotational programme, which enables you to spend time across our medical and surgical divisions.
