This post is an appointment for 12months initially with a possible further extension as a Clinical Research Fellow in Neuromuscular Disease at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust.
The regional neuromuscular service at Alder Hey is one of the larger neuromuscular centres in the UK and was awarded Centre of clinical excellence status by the by the Muscular Dystrophy UK. We currently care for approximately 650 children, adolescents and young adults with a large variety of neuromuscular conditions.
You will join a friendly, dynamic and forward-thinking multidisciplinary team who are committed to your training.The lead neuromuscular consultant will be responsible for your training curriculum, provide clinical training and supervision, will act as a mentor and provide career advice as desired. There will be opportunities to participate in local, national and international research and audits.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is expected to gain wide range of experience in both neuromuscular clinical and research aspects. The appointee will have the opportunity to participate in the acute and long-term assessment and management of children with a wide range of neuromuscular disorders in both inpatient and outpatients settings.
The post holder will develop skills in the modern inter-disciplinary diagnosis and management of children with neuromuscular disorders. This includes the appropriate use and interpretation of advanced investigations (neuroimaging, electrophysiology, histopathology, molecular genetics and metabolic investigations), interact with a wide array of professionals at local, national and international level as well learn about the various treatment options including genetic treatments (including gene replacement therapies, exon skipping therapies etc).
The fellow will be expected to attend joint multidisciplinary neuromuscular clinics (joint Spinal clinics, joint Orthopaedic and Neuropathy clinics, Joint Endocrine clinic, Joint Arthrogryposisclinics, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy clinics, Spinal Muscular Atrophy clinics, Myotonic dystrophy clinics etc). They will also attend multidisciplinary team meetings with Cardiology, Long Term Ventilation and Histopathology teams.
About us
The Neurophysiology department is located between the Neurology and Neurosurgery Wards and provides EMG and nerve conduction studies as well as formal sleep studies (3 cubicles on the Neurology Ward). The department also supports on-site video-telemetry (3 cubicles on the Neurology Ward) and invasive video-telemetry (I cubicle on the Neurosurgery Ward),The neurology unit has close links with the Department of Community Child Health which provides community neuro-disability services, Child Mental Health Services also provided by the Trust, Clinical Genetics (based at Liverpool Women's Hospital) and also with the Walton Neurosciences Trust, a adult neurological centre. There is also close working with the radiology department with access to advanced neuromuscular and neuroimaging techniques including a 1.5T and 3T intraoperative MRI scanner, SPECT and angiography. There are weekly neuro-radiology meetings. The paediatric neurology department has spearheaded the development of tele-medicine clinics with these partner sites across the North West.

- The Neuromuscular Research Fellow will participate in the recruitment and follow up of patients in the ongoing and upcoming trials including the Pfizer DMD gene therapy trial.
- Participate inforthcoming clinical trials in Neuromuscular disorders to improve trial capacity at Alder Hey Childrens Hospital and actively contribute to deliver the ambitious target of recruiting neuromuscular patients who wish to participate in clinical research
- Support the clinical activities of the NM team through attendance at MDT, participation in outpatient clinics and provide support to inpatients admitted under the NM team.
- Provide leadership and support to junior medical staff in the management of inpatients admitted by the NM team.
- Participate in specialised NM outpatient clinics and deliver follow upclinics/telephone advice
- Publish and present high level scientific information including analysing, writing and presenting reports relevant to the work being carried out as part of translational research in neuromuscular disorders.
- Continuously review theliterature and technology relevant to translational research in neuromuscular disorders and ensure that the outputs of the project are positioned appropriately in relation to other on-going work.
- Prepare and submit research proposals to funders.
- Regular liaison with the Chief Investigators and Principal Investigators and senior members of the research teams to communicate on the ongoing research and next possible steps.
