Job summary
Here at Alder Hey Outpatients, we are looking for experienced health care assistants, to join our friendly team. Applicants must be keen to expand their skills and willing to undertake paediatric phlebotomy. Applicants will be given full training and mentoring for a consolidation period at band 2, achieving band 3 when fully competent in paediatric capillary and venous sampling in children and young people.
Experience of working with children or in an Outpatient setting is desirable. We work as a large multi-disciplinary team to deliver outstanding care to our patients in Outpatients therefore experience of working collaboratively in a team within a healthcare environment is essential for this post. For many of our patients, Outpatients is the first impression of our hospital and therefore excellent communication skills are required for this position to ensure patients and their families / carer's are welcomed and reassured.

Role Summary:
To promote an environment suitable for the care of the children, ensuring that the best interest of the child is paramount. To ensure the efficient and effective provision of the Outpatient service by providing support to nursing staff, patients, families and clinicians.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical Effectiveness
- Assist nursing staff in providing care for Outpatients.
- Direct / accompany patients to other areas of the hospital for investigation or treatment.
- Ensure samples are labelled with patient identifiers and transported to the laboratory.
- Assist clinicians by acting as a chaperone.
- Perform relevant pre clinic investigations including height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, urinalysis and Point of Care tests. Document the results of pre clinic investigations electronically.
- Perform identified phlebotomy tests, following successful completion of competency based training.
- Create and maintain relationships with patients, parents and carers and offer support where necessary.
- Assist with the induction of new staff and students, ensuring they are instructed in the procedures and routine of Outpatient clinics.
- Adhere to Infection Prevention and Control policy and procedures.
Risk Management
- Promote and maintain a safe, clean and comfortable environment for patients and their families.
- Ensure the clinic area is tidy and free from obvious dangers or hazards.
- Ensure toys are clean and safe, removing any broken toys.
- Maintain readiness of all equipment ensuring that it is decontaminated after use and report if equipment is broken or faulty.
- In the event of an emergency, direct other patients and visitors away from the emergency area and assist trained staff where required.
- Produce legible and accurate records.
- Participate in incident reporting.
- To ensure that Trust Policies and Procedures are adhered to including:

Resource Effectiveness
- Assist with the effective utilisation of resources and maintenance of adequate stock levels.

- Work as part of a team to ensure appropriate cover for Outpatient clinics with a flexible approach to working patterns to meet the needs of the service.
Communication
- To promote effective communication which ensures a team approach to family centred care is encouraged and adopted.
- To provide up to date information for families in conjunction with the multi-professional team.
- Receive patients into clinic and use electronic patient flow system to track and flow patients in the department and directing patients to clinicians where required.
- Answer the telephone.
- Liaise with other staff and department within the Trust to support the care of the patient.
- Refer any complaints received on clinic to the Clinic Manager in a timely manner.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with Trust guidelines.
- Ensure case notes are tracked.
Continuous Professional Development
- Participate in professional development programmes within Outpatients.
- Undertake training for specialist ophthalmology skills and complete competency package, in liaison with the MDT.
- To support the induction of new members of the team and teach others.
