We are inviting applications to the position of Highly Specialist Physiotherapist for Cystic Fibrosis, Medicine, Training and Education within Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a specialist interest in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and the aspiration to undertake a new challenge in a CQC rated outstanding NHS Trust. A desire to drive services forward, develop high performing teams and provide efficient and effective clinical services is essential. With the support of the wider MDT including the CF service you will have the opportunity to complete research and undertake project work to improve the services provided to our client group.

Main duties of the job

This role is varied and would be ideally suited to an individual with values aligned to the Trust values of IMPACT. Developed leadership skills are required as you will lead the medical and cystic fibrosis therapy service providing day to day operational management and leadership to lower band clinicians and support workers. With highly developed respiratory skills you will be expected to provide support and teaching to lower band colleagues within your scope of practice. You will also lead the organisation, and provision of training for on call physiotherapists, alongside physiotherapy colleagues.

Clinically you will provide specialist physiotherapy assessment and treatment to patients with a diagnosis of cystic fibrosis in a range of settings including inpatients, outpatients, virtual clinics and at home.

As an 8a Physiotherapist, you will also be expected to work alongside the therapy leads, deputising when required and providing support in the operational provision of the wider therapy service.

The role is full time 37.5 hours per week, core service hours are Monday to Friday 8am-4pm. The successful candidate will be required to take part in the emergency respiratory on call service providing out of hours (evening and weekend) care to respiratory patients across the Trust.

JOB SUMMARY

To provide managerial and clinical leadership to the therapists providing care to patients in hospital and at home within the cystic fibrosis and medical teams ensuring high quality service delivery.

To take a lead role in the advanced assessment and treatment of patients who may have highly complex needs, and to determine clinical diagnosis and physiotherapy treatments and to maintain clinical documentation as an autonomous practitioner.

Undertake a highly specialist role in planning, developing, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating the physiotherapy service within CF and medicine.

To take a lead role in the development of the CF physiotherapy service in collaboration with the therapy leads and the CF Clinical Lead.

To take a lead role in planning, developing, co-ordinating and delivering respiratory physiotherapy training for therapy staff.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

CLINICAL

  • To undertake physiotherapy assessment, clinically diagnose and implement agreed treatment plans if appropriate including the routine treatment of complex patients in a manner that respects peoples privacy, dignity, and individuality. Treatment will involve the use of a range of skills appropriate to medicine and the speciality of CF, evidence based and in line with current practice.

To undertake advanced practice appropriate to the area of speciality e.g., non-medical prescribing.

  • To work collaboratively with the therapy teams and the wider MDT to ensure delivery of a co-ordinated multi-disciplinary service.

To ensure effective internal and external two-way communication with patients, carers and all other Health and Social Care Professionals regarding all aspects of patient care.

  • To supervise students and junior staff in their treatments and to ensure ongoing education in all aspects of treatment and care.
  • To provide specialist advice in clinics, ward rounds and MDT meetings.
  • To undertake relevant research and audit with the CF specialism, preparing abstracts and presentations for regional, national, and international meetings and conferences.

  • To work autonomously within the department taking into consideration the normal parameters of policies and procedures.

To support the Therapy Leads in achieving the service and department objectives as part of the senior therapy team.

To undertake relevant research and audit within CF and medicine.

To work collaboratively with the senior therapy team to ensure the safe delivery of therapy services across the whole trust on a daily basis.

To manage sickness, annual leave and day to day running of the CF and medical teams.
