Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Critical Care Nurse leader to join the Critical Care Unit as Lead Nurse for the services.

The Critical Care Lead Nurse is a key role within the Clinical Services leadership team and will collectively be responsible for the strategic and operational delivery of critical care within the division reporting to the Divisional director of Nursing.

The specialities you would be working within include Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery , Aortic Surgery, Post Cardiac Arrests and Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrests. This is an excellent opportunity to work at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. We are a specialist Cardiac, Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Trust which has received consistent outstanding ratings by CQC.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be responsible for the strategic and operational development of nursing ,quality, clinical practice and service developments within the Critical Care Unit. The Critical Care Lead Nurse will report to the Divisional Director of Nursing Will work collaboratively with the Divisional Management Team and the Clinical Lead for Critical Care

In this essential role, your portfolio will include strong clinical knowledge, previous extensive managerial experience and demonstrate experience in influential leadership and change management within an acute hospital setting. You will have a proven record in improving safety and working within a complex environment with skills in communication and problem solving.

We are seeking a strong nurse leader who encompasses all the above qualities and skills and has a desire to drive the team onwards.

Candidates must have an extensive critical care background, evidence of wider experience at a senior nurse level, and experience of managing complex workloads and areas. The post holder will be responsible for effective clinical and operational management within the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Critical Care Outreach Team and will support the Divisional Director of Nursing to drive the strategic direction of the service, ensuring business plans, budgets, workforce, and staff development are in place to deliver quality of service for the division and the Trust.

JOB SUMMARY

The post holder will be responsible for the strategic and operational development of nursing, quality, clinical practice and service developments within the Critical Care Unit. The Critical Care Lead Nurse will report to the Divisional Director of Nursing and accountable to the Director of Nursing and Quality. Will work collaboratively with the Divisional Management Team and the Clinical Lead for Critical Care to provide assurance to the Executive Team and the Trust Board that robust systems of governance are in place and that the Trusts patient and family experience is being delivered. Will have specific lead responsibilities within the division for planned care nursing and quality.The post holder will work closely with the relevant specialities, divisional and Trust wide professional teams. Having responsibility for the safe operating and performance of the relevant specialities and the delivery of professional standards pertaining to the clinical services. Responsible for the staff and budgetary management within Critical Care Unit. and for ensuring that performance targets and strategic objectives are met, including supporting managing capacity and demand to achieve national and local standards.

Developing a strategic approach to service improvement and best clinical pathways in partnership with the Clinical Leads, ensuring that quality, safety, and patient experience are managed effectively in line with national guidance and best practice.

The post holder will have primary responsibility for effective setting and management of the Critical Care budget and will lead on development of both short- and long-term business plans in relation to staffing and other resources.

Responsible for ensuring Surgical Activity and patient flow is managed effectively within the Critical care area.

Responsible for assuring that all Critical Care staff are competent within their clinical practice in accordance with GPICS Standards (Guidelines for the provision of Intensive Care Services) and that the Critical Care unit adheres to the GPICS and National Standards.

The Critical Care Lead Nurse will provide leadership to the senior team within Critical Care and will contribute to service developments across the division.

MANAGERIAL/LEADERSHIP

support the Divisional Director of Nursing and Director of Nursing with potential highly complex clinical issues within Critical Care and the Division when required.

Responsible for managing incidents in line with national framework, taking a lead on rapid review process within specialities.

lead workforce review and redesign for Critical Care in line with service needs and changing roles in healthcare.

undertake regular skill mix and dependency reviews to inform staffing establishments.

Manage effective external stakeholder engagement with key partners including the Critical Care Network and other Provider Trusts

Participation in the Senior Managers on Call rota

ORGANISATIONAL

implement sustainable and effective systems of governance (clinical, financial, staff, research and information) within the Unit, which meet Care Quality Commission (CQC), NHS Improvement, Intensive Care Society and Critical Care Network and other relevant standards/targets.
