Job summary
This post is for a substantive appointment of a Consultant Cardiologist
with a special interest in Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICC) and Cardiac Devices. The appointee will be expected to be
proficient in the management of all ICC patients, and the implantation and
follow-up of all Cardiac Device patients.
The appointee will be joining a team of 2 dedicated ICC cardiologists and 8 EP/device specialists/ 2 device/ heart failure cardiologists with varying levels of involvement in the ICC service. We have one ICC nurse consultant and a further ICC nurse specialist. There is a rolling full time ICC clinical fellow, this post is designed for post CCT cardiologists. We have a further 4 imaging cardiologists and the coronary intervention team, and a dedicated separate ACHD team. This is a new appointment to help achieve NSF targets and support the ongoing and rapidly expanding Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICC) service.
The specialist ICC service is delivered through outpatient clinics, an established surgical and interventional septal reduction service, device implantation and ablation of arrhythmias.
Main duties of the job
The
attached job plan represents a general guide to the job plan for the post. The precise details of all clinical activities
are open to negotiation with the successful candidate, recognising that further
areas of interest of ICC specialists can range though imaging,
electrophysiology and heart failure. It is anticipated that there will be a
degree of flexible working between all members of the ICC team. The timetable is fairly flexible and can be
adjusted to suit the needs of the appointee and any other specific interests
they may have.
The
appointee will be expected to join a 1 in 10 rota to cover on regional EP and device
on-call. This service provides advice to local hospitals and involves the inpatient
care of device and EP patents at LHCH. This includes a ward round of patients
requiring review on Saturday and Sunday, and a provision of out-of-hours pacing
when required.
The appointee will be expected to work
with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of
services and will share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution
to management.

afield. There is a strong link with the
Genetics service at Liverpool Womens hospital with a Consultant Geneticist
present for ICC clinics and the ICC MDT. We also
have the presence of genetic counsellors on site for 2
days/week. The heart muscle disease service has benefited from a true
multi-disciplinary clinic once a month with imaging / EP / device / structural
expertise. There are 3 specific heart muscle disease clinics per week in
addition with the current dedicated ICC Cardiologists and 2 nurse specialists.
There is an ICC fellow present at all heart muscle disease and
electrophysiology ICC clinics. Referrals to all aspects of ICC, but especially
heart muscle disease have increased significantly.
The specialist ICC service is delivered through outpatient
clinics, an established surgical and interventional septal reduction service,

There is a significant commitment to research and audit and
a training commitment to the StRs in general training and those who wish to
specialise. There has been a major development of research facilities. This has
been further developed in recent years with the creation of the Liverpool
Cardiovascular
Centre for Science. This was launched with the appointment of Professor Gregory
Lip and provides an excellent network across the academic facilities of
Merseyside. There has been a record of successful research and publications
over the past 5 years. The heart muscle disease service has increased its
portfolio of research in recent years with multiple international
collaborations leading to high level publications guiding management of our
patients. Our patients benefit from access to novel trial medications and LHCH
has acted as the lead UK centre for recent myosin inhibitor trials.
There
are strong links with local secondary care cardiologists and a strong local
network (Cheshire and Mersey cardiac network).
There are regular meeting of the cardiology advisory board which is a
clinical forum of the CMCN. There are
inter-trust educational and audit meetings and strong research links with the
Royal Liverpool University Hospital and various university departments.
