Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated staff to join our highly skilled teams.

We have 8 cardiac/thoracic theatres, a pacing theatre, endoscopy room and a recovery unit and a fantastic team of theatre nurses and ODP's. We are incredibly busy following the Covid-19 pandemic with both elective and emergency pathways and cover various specialities including Cardiac, Thoracic, Aortic, Vascular, ACHD, etc.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for you to join a highly motivated multidisciplinary team delivering patient centred care, with emphasis on quality and patient safety. . Our theatre team is committed to ensuring that staff are trained to meet the demands of their role through a competency based training programme. We have a dedicated Training and Development Officer. We offer a personalised induction programme, supernumerary status for a minimum of three months and clinical courses to help you reach your potential. You will be enthusiastic, motivated and willing to learn a wide range of skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required along with the ability to work as part of a team.

Job description

Job responsibilities

With support from the Registered Nurse/ ODP, participate fully in the delivery of planned nursing care, inc all aspects of nursing care (KSF Dimension HWB5 level 1)

Participate in the assessment of health care needs through the completion and interpretation of assessment tools documentation. (KSF Dimension HWB6 Level 1)

Undertake general patient observations inc temp, pulse , blood pressure, Oxygen saturation levels, general appearance and fluid balance and report anything untoward to Registered Nursing Staff/ ODP (KSF Dimension HWB6 Level 1)

At the direction of the Registered Nurse/ ODP, undertake a range of clinical duties and skills (including safe positioning of patients, preparation of surgical/anaesthetic equipment, swab/needle/instrument counts, collection of patient specimens for laboratory testing, preparation and assistance in clinical procedures inc insertion of intravenous lines, urinary catheter etc) (KSF Dimension HWB 6 and HWB 7 Level 1)

Participate in the decontamination and reprocessing of surgical instruments/ equipment. (KSF Dimension 3 level 1)

Assist the Registered Nurse/ ODP in the evaluation of care and completion of patient documents and ensure all entries in patients records have been countersigned by the Registered Practitioner (KSF Dimension C1 level 1)

Involve patients and carers/relatives in the delivery of care. (KSF Dimension HWB5 level 1).

Provide reassurance and support to patients. (KSF Dimension C1 level 2)

Work collaboratively with others in the Operating Theatre to ensure that patients needs are met. (KSF Dimension C5 level 1 )

Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations. (KSF Dimension C3 Level 1 )

Undertake transfer and escort of patients with moderate dependency, as directed to Theatres, Catheter Labs and other Clinical Departments. (KSF Dimension 3 level 1 )

Undertake safe disposal of waste and sharps as per Trust policy (KSF Dimension C3 Level 1)

Care of patients property and valuables in accordance with Trust policy (KSF Dimension C3 level 1)

Managerial/Leadership.

Contribute to the development of services. (KSF Dimension 4 Level 1)

Ensure the effective and efficient use of resources. (KSF Dimension 5 Level 1)

Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients and staff and report any concern. (KSF Dimension 3 Level 1)

Monitor and maintain adequate stock levels within the operating theatre. (KSF Dimension C5 level 1)

Undertake a range of clerical duties in the absence of or in support of the Theatre Receptionist / Technical Officer to ensure a smooth running service inc; reception and telephone duties, basic computer skills, locating and obtaining supplies and equipment (KSF Dimension IK1 Level 1)

Education and Development.

Develop own skills and knowledge with assistance from others and reviews work against the KSF outline for the post, identifying learning required to undertake the job or what is required to do the job better . (KSF Dimension C2 Level 2)
