Job summary
The post is full time at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. The successful applicant will work with the Device and EP Consultants at the Trust. Outpatient work will involve assessment and management of arrhythmias, heart failure and assessment for device therapy.
The post is initially for 6 months with the possibility of it being extended to 12.
Main duties of the job
This post is for a senior trainee in cardiology with a special interest in device therapy. This post is ideally suited for someone who is competent in bradycardia pacing and wishes to consolidate their knowledge and increase their experience particularly with Cardiac resynchronisation therapy before taking up a consultant post.
There is a comprehensive Postgraduate Education and Clinical Research Programme in place and on-site facilities include a specialist library with free access to the Internet, doctors study room, staff gym and on site single accommodation (subject to availability).
Although this post does not have approval from the Deanery or the SAC, it is equivalent to our SpR posts, which do have approval. The post holder will also have the full entitlement to annual and study leave and have full access to the in-house training that is provided.

JOB SUMMARY
This post is for a Clinical Fellow in Cardiology with a special interest in Device therapy. This post is ideally suited to a senior trainee in devices who wishes to consolidate their knowledge and increase their experience before taking up a consultant post. Applications would also be welcomed from individuals with less experience who are committed to a career in Device therapy. The appointee will be expected to have basic proficiency in bradycardia device and ICD implants and troubleshooting and have had reasonable exposure to cardiac resynchronisation therapy.
The Centre provides a full range of invasive and non-invasive Diagnostic Cardiopulmonary facilities.14 sessions of device implantation are undertaken in a week. There is a dedicated pacing theatre and a further theatre opened in May 2007 with four sessions for cardiac pacing (the remaining sessions are for aneurysm surgery/aortic stenting)
During the last year, approximately 1200 EPS procedures and 1500 device-related procedures (including over 250 ICD and 450 CRT procedures) were performed, making it the largest arrhythmia unit in the country.
The Centre is a Foundation Trust, which has seen a great deal of development in the last few years. As a result of major capital investment the Centre is able to provide:
- 180 Medical and Surgical beds
- 40 medical beds; 26 day case beds;
- 12 Bed Cystic Fibrosis Ward
- 69 Surgical beds (including 4 HDU step-down)
- 34 bedded Critical Care Unit (potential to expand to 40)
- 10 CCU beds; 24 surgical ITU beds (potential to expand to 30)

CLINICAL DUTIES
The post is full time at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. The successful applicant will work with the Device and EP consultants at the trust. Outpatient work will involve assessment and management of arrhythmias, heart failure and assessment for device therapy.
The appointee will be jointly responsible for management of patients transferred to the LHCH with life threatening or incessant arrhythmias and for patients developing arrhythmia following cardiothoracic surgery or PCI procedures as well as the delivery of the Heart failure service within the trust.
The successful candidate will receive intensive training in all aspects of bradycardia pacing, ICD and CRT implantation and trouble-shooting. They will also be exposed to basic electrophysiology, complex revision and extraction work undertaken at the centre and implantation of leadless pacemakers and subcutaneous ICDs.The holder will gain considerable experience of the management of cardiac device patients in a tertiary setting.
There will be an opportunity to participate in the Tier 2 Cardiology rota within the trust.
Specific duties
Outpatient clinics- One tertiary device clinic per week
One specialist HF clinic per week
One Pacing/ ICD/ CRT clinic

1 EP session per week
1 revision/extraction session
Ward Work- The trainee will attend one Consultant ward round per week and will supervise the day to day work of the Senior House Officers/Trust Doctors.
RESEARCH/TEACHING/ADMINISTRATION
Equivalent to 2 half days per week. The post holder will be expected to take a minimum of a half day for research/ private study each week as part of the research collaboration between LHCH and The Royal Brompton Hospital (Institute of Cardiovascular Medicine and Science). The post holder will be involved in projects with a view to publication within the time frame of the fellowship. Attendance at National and International meetings will be encouraged, particularly for presentation of data.
The Centre undertakes teaching of all final year under graduates from the University of Liverpool Medical School and is also recognised for the training of nurses and other professional and technical staff. The post holder will be involved in teaching these groups of staff and other junior doctors.
A regular programme of conferences, lectures and seminars takes place within LHCH. The Centre is committed to the principal and practice of clinical audit in which all medical staff are expected to participate. The appointee will be expected to attend and take part in the various educational meetings. They will be expected to present cases, develop an audit interest and present the data locally.
A specialist Library is available on site. In addition, the libraries of the Liverpool Medical Institution, Liverpool University and Broadgreen Hospital are also available for reference. There is also a purpose built doctors mess, including office space, computing facilities and recreational facilities.
RECORD OF TRAINING
All training is subject to annual assessment by an Educational Supervisor and Programme Director. As well as serving as a review and training, this will allow planning and flexibility within the post holders programme and will allow for career advice and development of specific interests accordingly.
Post holders will be expected to keep a Log Book of all practical procedures undertaken, available from the British Cardiac Society, which will be regularly reviewed by their supervising consultant and signed accordingly.
ANNUAL LEAVE AND STUDY LEAVE
The post holder will have full entitlement to annual and study leave. All leave arrangements are subject to approval by the administrative SpR and the supervisory consultant. In addition, Study leave applications are also subject to approval by the Postgraduate Clinical Tutor.
