Job responsibilities

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

CLINICAL

To provide a physiotherapy service to the Knowsley Community Respiratory Team ensuring high quality, timely and evidence-based care to patients.

To timely assess, plan, treat and review cardio-respiratory and physiotherapy needs of patients within the community setting.

To provide advice to patients, families and other health professionals with regard to physiotherapy.

To support senior staff in service development.

To work closely with outside agencies to ensure service delivery.

To maintain patient records accurately and legibly in accordance with professional and trust guidelines.

Communicate effectively with all members of the MDT regarding the management of patients.

Supervise and monitor the assessment and treatment plans of junior staff & undergraduates.

To participate in the on-call service.

To provide a physiotherapeutic service over seven days.

To provide appropriate ambulatory oxygen assessment and prescription of oxygen therapy.

To provide timely and appropriate assessment and treatment for patients requiring support with chest clearance and breathlessness management, including using appropriate adjuncts this includes routine and urgent, including appropriate PGD use.

To provide hypertonic saline and nebulised antibiotic trails as required.

Develop advanced clinical skills in history taking, clinical examination, assessment and/or treatment of respiratory disease

MANAGERIAL/LEADERSHIP

To support the band 7 with delivery of physiotherapy to the Community respiratory service.

To develop policies & clinical guidelines as necessary.

To support band 7 in achieving KPI targets.

To represent physiotherapy at relevant MDT meetings within the directorate.

To be responsible for the collection of statistics and maintenance of databases as required nationally and within the department.

To support and mentor more junior members of staff, including appraisals.

To deputies in the absence of the team leader to ensure smooth running of the physiotherapy service, managing attendance and to follow trust policies and procedures.

ORGANISATIONAL

To work alongside peers in provision of an in-service training programme for peers, junior staff and undergraduates.

To provide training and education to other health care staff in respect of physiotherapy provision and equipment.

To undertake Professional Development Reviews with junior staff as required.

To provide appropriate education and training to patients, family, careers and other healthcare professional as appropriate

To comply with the health and safety policies of the Trust including attendance at mandatory training sessions as specified by the Trust.

To comply with departmental and organisational policies and procedures.

Ensure all accidents, incidents and hazards are reported and dealt with according to Trust requirements.

To comply with the Data Protection Act and Caldicott recommendations.

To maintain accurate documentation in line with local policies and procedures.

To gain valid informed consent in line with Trust and Departmental Policy.

PROFESSIONAL

Degree in Physiotherapy or equivalent

To participate in continuing professional development as per trust policy.

To maintain registration with the Health Professions council.

To perform all duties in accordance with the HCPC & CSP Standards.

To participate in research & audit.

QUALITY

To participate in and support senior staff in the provision of training to department staff.

To highlight any service delivery issues to the clinical specialist/team leader.

Attend Annual Mandatory Training

To participate in clinical audit as necessary

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Degree in Physiotherapy
• Evidence of relevant postgraduate courses/CPD in Pulmonary Rehabilitation and treatment of respiratory conditions e.g. COPD, pneumonia, asthma and bronchiectasis.

Desirable

• Membership of relevant clinical interest groups e.g. ACPRC, BTS, ERS etc

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

• Demonstrable experience of acute and chronic physiotherapeutic management of respiratory patients.
• Experience of supervision and development of students, junior staff and/or assistants.
• Evidence of participation in research/audit.
• A minimum of 2 years experience.

Desirable

• Clinical experience in the field of Cardiology
• Previous band 6 experience
• Previous community experience
• Non-medical Prescriber

Skills & Abilities

Essential

• Ability to motivate patients to participate in treatment and educate them and their families regarding benefits of various treatment modalities.
• An ability to work individually and as part of a wider MDT and communicate appropriately with all grades of staff, patients and their families.
• Ability to manage own workload and have the ability to manage, organize and supervise the workload of others when required.
• Evidence of presentation and teaching skills

Desirable

• Experience of presenting to mixed audiences e.g. doctors, nursing staff and other AHPs
