Job summary
We are looking to recruit a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics with a specialist interest in Lower Limb, Hip & Knee Surgery. This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for highly a motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
This post, which will be based at Ormskirk, Southport, Whiston & St Helens Hospitals, requires clear vision, initiative, flexibility, and the ability to lead and coordinate the team. As well as the elective and emergency work, the successful applicant will be expected to develop their subspecialty interest and complement the sub-specialty interests of the existing consultants and meeting the needs of the local health economy.
Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Trauma & Orthopaedics (UK or equivalent qualifications), to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register or due to obtain their CCT within six months of the date of interview. CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation of successful application.
This is a 10 PA role - 8.5 PAs DCC's per week including appropriate admin time and 1.5 SPA's for Supporting Professional Development. Additional PAs may be offered to help with inpatient activity capacity and to lead in service areas.

Main duties of the job
- Provide advice on complex clinical problems based on interdisciplinary principles. He/she should provide second opinions for concerned patients at the request of consultant colleagues.
- Take an active part in continuing medical education.
- Provide clinical training for junior staff and undergraduate students and participate in the weekly postgraduate programme.
- Participate actively in audit and will be encouraged to pursue research and education activities.
- Be encouraged to participate in Trust, Regional and National developments to facilitate modernisation of the speciality and enhance the profile and capability of the organisation for the benefit of patients and staff.
- Be encouraged to contribute to the management of the department with the objective of the continued improvement of the service
- To liaise with the other Lower Limb Surgeons in respect of annual leave and study leave to ensure that there is always the appropriate number of Lower Limb Surgeons available to provide advice and support and to undertake Lower Limb traumaThis Job plan may be subject to change however the following principles will apply
- Once the full complement of consultants are recruited, the on call commitment, including consultant of the week rota, is 1 in 10 weeks.

Specialist Regional Services
We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.
