Job summary

As part of our team expansion, the Emergency Department at Southport & Ormskirk is looking to recruit 2 enthusiastic Consultants in Emergency Medicine to join our highly skilled team. These are whole time 10 PA positions with additional PAs available depending on job planning and Royal College approval.

The Emergency Department at Southport , which sees approximately 50,000 patients a year, has recently benefitted from a full refurbishment offering a state of the art resuscitation room, bespoke mental health, protected cubicle capacity for patients brought in by ambulance, and a separate Clinical Decision Unit.

The ED team are determined, motivated and forward thinking. Over recent years the team have led on the introduction of ambulatory emergency care in the trust and also in frailty pathways, particularly admission avoidance. We have presented our work in these areas nationally andwe maintain close links with the Ambulatory Care Unit and the acute physicians.

Main duties of the job

All applicants must be either on the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their CCT award/ CESR at the time of interview.

The successful candidate will participate on the on-call rota. The Trust is happy to consider flexible working arrangements and extended days to deliver a desirable work life balance, support professional goals and personal development.

The adult ED department enjoys excellent working relationships with the Paediatric ED department based on the Ormskirk site and the post holder will be expected to undertake weekly sessions within the Paediatric ED department.

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

The department is active in education with a number ofthe current consultants having defined educational roles within the trust. We use simulation extensively as an educational tool. We host medical students, physician associate students alongside student nurses, student allied health professionals and junior doctors.

We are part of the Mersey and Cheshire trauma network as an accredited Trauma receiving unit. Some of the consultant ED team also work at the MTC as trauma team leaders on an ad hoc basis in order to maintain skills.

The Paediatric ED sees approximately 25,000 patients per year. As a completely separate unit Ormskirk ED offers bespoke paediatric facilities. As well as a full resuscitation and minors area there is a procedure room and a number of treatment rooms. The department offers a very child friendly environment with a play room and numerous toys and games. The nursing staff are highly trained with all Band 6 staff having full APLS. The department has close links with the department of paediatrics and shares educational activities. Paediatric ED can access the paediatric assessment unit thereby offering the ability to undertake observation of ED patients.
