Job summary
This post is for a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist with Obstetric (Fetal Monitoring) interest. This is a whole time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals.
Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Obstetrcians and Gynaecologists (UK or equivalent qualifications), to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register or due to obtain their CCT within six months of the date of interview.
Main duties of the job
This is a new post designed to improve the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Service in St Helens & Knowsley, and to share the general workload with the other Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. The successful candidate will join a team of 13 Consultants within the directorate who currently provide services for General Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Feto-maternal Medicine, Urogynaecology, Menstrual disorders, Menopause, Subfertility, Outpatient hysteroscopy and Gynaecological Oncology. The directorate is supported by 7 Specialty Doctors (2 Associate specialists and 5 Specialty doctor), 5 Specialty Trainees 3+, 2 STr 1& 2, 5 GPSTrs and 1 FY2.
The unit delivers approximately 4000 babies a year in a well appointed labour ward with 2 dedicated operating theatres. The Obstetric unit is supported by a level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with a Special Care Baby Unit of 15 cots.

The Womens Health Directorate is based at Whiston Hospital in St Helens and Knowsley Teaching hospitals NHS Trust with some outpatient services and Day surgery at St Helens hospital (all outpatient hysteroscopy/PMB & colposcopy clinics are at St Helens hospital in the brand new DTC). The directorate currently delivers about 4000 babies per annum. All services are provided in the directorate and are all consultants led including satellite clinics at Runcorn, Widnes and Newton. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has 15 cots, is level 2 and is housed adjacent to the Delivery suite, and currently undertakes care of neonates from 27 weeks gestation. The Directorate is committed to expanding the role of the midwife. There is an excellent level of co-operation between the Doctors (at all levels), Midwives and Nurses in the unit that ensures that the quality of care delivered is optimal at all times. There are designated Core Midwives in charge of labour ward suite. These Midwives are experienced Practitioners with expanding roles / tasks such as reading, interpreting complex CTGs and are involved in the Drills and Skills mandatory training courses for all medical and midwifery staff.

- RCOG ATSM or equivalent and demonstrable experience including that relating to a special interest to complement existing colleagues e.g. Advanced Labour ward practice ATSM and Labour ward lead ATSM or High Risk pregnancy ATSM or Obstetric Medicine ATSM or Fetal Medicine ATSM.
- Demonstrable experience to manage a Labour Ward independently
- Knowledge and experience to participate on the Consultant on call rota
- Evidence of appropriate teaching experience within the last 3 years
