St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust provides services across two main sites at Whiston Hospital and St Helens Hospital. The Trust operates on an annual budget in excess of £200 million, has in excess of 800 beds and employs approximately 4,000 clinical and non-clinical staff.

The Department of medicine for Older People (DMOP) delivers care in 2 inpatient geriatrics wards (5A and 5B), a frailty unit, community frailty services for St. Helens, Knowsley and Halton, and Urgent Community Response services for St Helens, 2 intermediate care units (Duffy based at St. Helens hospital and Newton cottage hospital), as well as the Hyper acute (HASU) and acute stroke units (ASU) (5C and 5D). We provide in-patient and out-patient care for a range of conditions presenting in the older person and our consultants offer specialist interests and expertise in falls, orthogeriatric, surgical liaison, frailty, dementia and delirium, movement disorder and stroke. We work closely with colleagues throughout the trust as the majority of inpatient work involves the frail older person.
