Job summary

This post is for a Senior Clinical Fellow to work General Medicine. This is a full-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated doctor to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals.

The post holder will be required to work fulltime and will contribute to the ST3+ or IMT3 on-call rota, depending on experience. There may also be an opportunity to experience sub-speciality clinics/procedures, depending on the interest/experience of the post-holder.

Due to the short term nature of the role/service demand, the successful candidate must hold full registration with the GMC and have existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application. Candidates who are not GMC registered or do not hold existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application will not progress through the shortlisting stage.

Main duties of the job

The Medical Care Group comprises medical specialties such as Medicine for Older People, Emergency Department, Cardiology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Haematology, ITU, HDU, CCU, Paediatrics, Dermatology and Intermediate Care. The Surgical Care Group includes all of the surgical disciplines, Anaesthetics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Support Services include Radiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Haematology, Neurophysiology and Cardiorespiratory.

The Medical Care Group comprises 415 medical beds including a 48 bedded Acute Medical Unit (AMU) with a GP / Ambulatory Care unit, a 17 bedded CCU, a 29 bedded Stroke Unit, 20 bed Haematology Unit and a 27 bed Intermediate Care Unit. There is also an Endoscopy Suite, a Cancer Day Hospital, a satellite Haemodialysis Unit and an OP Diabetes Unit. The Department of Medicine for Older People has in total 152 beds, including a frailty unit.

About us

A £338 million (PFI) investment has re-built and modernised both Whiston and St Helens Hospitals, resulting in modern state of the art health care facilities for the treatment and care of patients. St Helens Hospital was completed in 2008 and Whiston Hospital in 2010. The hospitals include 887 inpatient beds with state of the art CT and MRI facilities existing on both hospital sites. CT and MRI scanners at St Helens have also recently been upgraded including installation of a high field 3 Tesla MRI scanner. The DEXA scanner is also located at St Helens Hospital.

The Trust provides a full range of acute inpatient, outpatient, day case and emergency services to local communities of St Helens, Knowsley, parts of Halton and Liverpool. The Regional Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit also extends its services to the whole of Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales and the Isle of Man.
