Job summary

This post is for a Junior Clinical Fellow in Acute Medical Unit. This is a whole time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals (STHK)

The successful candidate will work for STHK NHS Trust and be covered by the terms of service as amended from time to time by the Trust. As a consequence he/she is expected to work within the local policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust. All medical staff under contract to the Trust will be expected to comply with the Trust Health and Safety policies.

Due to the role starting on the 4th August, all applicants must hold existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application.

Applicants must be eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment.

Applicants must be available to commence employment from the 4th August 2021.

Main duties of the job

This post is appointed to support the Acute Medical Unit in the Trust. This post offers experience of Acute Medicine in a highly-functional AMU and the opportunity to gain a specialist skill with allocated time incorporated in the job plan, if the successful candidate so wishes. Examples of specialist kills include procedural skill training (FICE/USS), simulation training within the trust, Education, Leadership or Management with a budget for courses. We would, however, be happy to consider and discuss other suggestions from any suitable candidates.

The post holder will be required to work to a rota comprising a mixture of 9am-5pm day shifts, twilight (1pm-10pm or 5pm-2am) shifts and weekend shifts.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Medical Care Group comprises medical specialties such as Medicine for Older People, Emergency Department, Cardiology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Haematology, ITU, HDU, CCU, Paediatrics, Dermatology and Intermediate Care. The Surgical Care Group includes all of the surgical disciplines, Anaesthetics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Support Services include Radiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Haematology, Neurophysiology and Cardiorespiratory.

The new Medical Unit itself comprises 415 medical beds including a 48 bedded Acute Medical Unit (AMU) with a GP / Ambulatory Care unit, a 17 bedded CCU, a 29 bedded Stroke Unit, 20 bed Haematology Unit and a 27 bed Intermediate Care Unit. There is also an Endoscopy Suite, a Cancer Day Hospital, a satellite Haemodialysis Unit and an OP Diabetes Unit. The Department of Medicine for Older People has in total 152 beds.

Acute Medical Unit

The Acute Medical Unit consists of 56 beds with a 4 bedded area for Enhanced Care provision for patients.

There is also co-located male and female trolley assessment area for Assessment as well as provision of Same Day Emergency Care.

We also provide follow up for patients in the AMU Outpatient Clinic.

We have a team of 10 Acute Medical Consultants as well as a number of specialty consultants providing sessions working on the unit alongside an excellent large team of motivated and enthusiastic doctors, ANPs, nurses, HCAs, pharmacists and operational managers.

Audit and Education

The Trust has a clearly defined program of medical audit. The appointee will be expected to participate in clinical audit.

The Trust has a weekly Grand Round held in the Education Centre, every Tuesday lunchtime. All disciplines take part on a rotational basis. The centre has a purpose built lecture theatre, seminar rooms and library.

The Trust has, for decades, been one of the 3 major providers of clinical training for undergraduates from the University of Liverpool and was awarded Teaching Hospital status in 2008.

There is a varied program of lectures and seminars and sub-specialty educational meetings and an excellent medical illustration department.
