Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 2 Clerical Officer to join the team on Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU). We are a fast paced environment that strives to provide excellent assessment, efficient treatment and high quality patient care.

SEU is a 20 bedded assessment unit that provides urgent care and assessment for a diverse range of acutely unwell surgical patients.

We also have an ambulatory area with 6 trolleys and 16 chairs, where we provide initial assessment for patients referred via their general practitioner or from ED.

In addition to this, we run an ambulatory clinic (Mon - Fri) which allows investigations such as CT/ Ultrasound scans to be done efficiently and at short notice. This clinic helps prevent hospital admissions whilst positively impacting on patient experience.

This vacancy is being advertised as an apprenticeship and as such the salary for the role if reflective of this. Those who currently hold and can evidence the essential qualifications need not apply. Your application will not be shortlisted if you hold the essential qualification(s).

Although English and Maths at level 2 is not required for the role, it is a requirement to complete the apprenticeship and need to be in place by the end of the apprenticeship. If you do not hold or cannot evidence English and Maths at level 2 then support will be provided for the successful applicant(s) as part of the Trust's apprenticeship offer.

Main duties of the job

  • Greet patients and visitors face to face and on the telephone providing advice and support as necessary.
  • To check demographic details are correct on admission and discharge
  • To put patients onto cerner.
  • Maintain supplies of demographic labels, notes etc.
  • Keep casenotes trolleys clean, tidy and in bed order.
  • To arrange transport for patients attending other hospitals / departments.
  • To answer the telephone, taking messages or transferring calls as appropriate
  • To co-ordinate outpatient appointments with clinic clerk prior to discharge.
  • To prepare any discharged patients paperwork for scanning.
  • To provide support to nursing staff for general patient requests.
  • Liaise with informatics regarding electronic equipment.
  • To organise HOT / Elective clinic daily.

Whilst this role is being advertised as a permanent position, there is an expectation that the successful applicant must complete all elements of the apprenticeship. Initially, the successful applicant will be placed on a fixed term apprenticeship contract for the duration of the programme. Upon completion of the apprenticeship and providing all additional milestones are met, the successful applicant will be issued a permanent contract.
