Job summary

We are looking to appoint enthusiastic doctors with an interest in medical education for teaching fellowships to support undergraduate medical education at Walsall Manor Hospital.

These Fellowship posts will provide an opportunity for a Specialty Registrar or Core level doctor to develop teaching skills. The main focus of the role will be to supporting the bedside teaching, simulation and other small group teaching to support the Birmingham Medical School undergraduate curriculum. Successful candidates will be fully supported and funded to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education during the post.

You will hold the title of Honorary Clinical Lecturer at University of Birmingham. This post is supported by Health Education West Midlands. The post will suit doctors seeking to develop further before entering Higher Specialist Training or as an Out Of Programme Experience for those in training posts already. A minimum of 2 years post graduate experience is needed for this post.

The posts will have no on-call commitment.

The post is 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. One PA per week for PDT time is provided.

Please note: Additional training/study days are dependant on the availability of funding streams.

Main duties of the job

Walsall has a longstanding commitment to provide placements for University of Birmingham medical students and achieves excellent feedback as a placement hospital. Clinical Teaching Fellows will be part of the Undergraduate Academy Team and be actively involved in organising and delivering undergraduate medical education.

Post-holders will be encouraged to undertake a funded PG Cert in Education for Health Professionals at the University of Birmingham during the 12 month post. Nine sessions each week are allocated for teaching undergraduate medical education and one session allocated for clinical experience in a specialty area of choice.

The post provides a unique opportunity for doctors seeking to develop further before entering Higher Specialist Training or as an Out Of Programme Experience for those in training posts already. It is not suited to applicants who prefer a longer term or permanent employment contract. A minimum of 2 years post-graduate experience is needed for this post.

  9. To undertake quality improvement and/or research depending on the candidates interest.
  10. To comply with all relevant Trust policies and procedure.
