Trainee Healthcare Scientist - Pharmacy Aseptic Services
We are looking to recruit a Trainee Healthcare Scientist to work within the aseptic unit at Walsall Pharmacy.. Under the guidance of the Lead Pharmacist for Cancer Services and the Technical Managers for Aseptic Services, the unit operates under Exemption under Section 10 of the Medicines Act 1968 and prepares a range of aseptically prepared chemotherapy and monoclonal antibodies.
We are looking to appoint a highly motivated individual who is looking to work within the aseptic unit and has a keen eye for detail, is a good communicator, is flexible in their approach and enjoys working as part of a team. You will train via the apprenticeship programme for a duration of 24 months. This will consist of 4 days a week of on the job training and 1 day a week virtual learning delivered by West Suffolk College. On successful completion of the course, you will be able to work as Science Manufacturing Technician at a Band 4 and register with the Science Council.
If you hold a NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Service Skills qualification and have the English and Maths certificatiions and are looking to broaden your experience within pharmacy , or are excited about a change in sector then this is the opportunity for you.
You will be fully supported through your apprenticeship programme to learn the necessary skills and complete the required learning to become a fully trained and competent member of the aseptic unit.
Main duties of the job
You will learn
- The environmental monitoring of the aseptic unit through the use of broth media and recording of temperatures and pressures
- How to assemble ingredients, worksheet and labels of raw materials
- Learn the preparation of chemotherapy/monoclonal antibodies including in-process volume checks and visual inspection of final products
- How to clean and disinfect the unit according to standard operating procedures on a daily, weekly, three monthly and annual basis along with other general housekeeping duties to maintain the unit.
- Learn and assist in the ordering and replenishment of stocks
You will be issued with assignments and projects via your virtual learning with some supervised study time but there will be a requirement to complete some work in your own time as well.
There is also a requirement to support the wider pharmacy team within the dispensary with a commitment to late night, weekend and bank holiday working on rota and full training in the use of computer and labelling systems will be provided.

The Aseptic unit In the Pharmacy Department is focused on maintaining and improving quality and performance and works closely with our Cancer Services directorate to deliver a service that adapts to the changing needs of our local population.
You will be part of the Aseptic Team and also the Dispensary. We are committed to developing staff and are growing our Education and Training Team to support and move forwards with new opportunities for staff.
The Pharmacy team are friendly and welcoming and support staff learning using their skills and knowledge in preparation for any competency based assessments. The teams consists of Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Assistants and Admin staff. We have a diverse team of students in Pharmacy department.
