Job summary

Walsall Healthcare Trust has an exciting opportunity to recruit a Consultant in Colorectal Surgery. We are seeking a driven individual dedicated to making a difference to patient care and staff satisfaction.

This is a new post based within the General Surgery Care Group and Division of Surgery Services . The post holder will join as an additional Consultant Colorectal Surgeon with a view to developing a Colorectal sub-speciality interest within the department. This post will consist of 10 Programmed Activities per week and include participation in a 1 in 9 predictable on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join an established team of Colorectal Surgeons providing benign and malignant colorectal surgery. The successful candidate will be expected to take an active role in maintaining and developing the elective Colorectal & General Surgery service with opportunities to participate in Colorectal work with a weekly MDT whilst contributing equitably to the out of hour's service for both elective and emergency activity.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute equitably to Emergency Surgery at Walsall Manor Hospital. The service is covered by an on-call Consultant who is Surgeon of the week (Currently 1 in 9 rotas) who has no elective commitment during that week. During the on-call week the nominated surgeon is responsible for inpatient surgical emergency work including day to day decision making and Consultant led ward rounds. This is supported by a CEPOD Consultant who is responsible for covering the emergency operating theatre

To provide, with the other Consultant Surgeons, the acute general surgical service at Walsall Manor Hospital operating a system of mutual out of hours cover to include the provision of prospective cover for the annual and study leave of colleagues

  • To be responsible for ensuring a commitment in providing a high quality colorectal service to patients by continual development of practice in the light of research evidence and by audit against Clinical standards.
  • To provide a comprehensive outpatient service from clinics.
  • To support teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students and Postgraduate Medical Education in general. The Trust will strongly Support and allow time for CPD for the Successful candidate.
  • To support and encourage audit and research and develop close links with academic initiatives.
  • To actively participate in CME and personal development programmes.
  • To support the on-going development of services for General Surgery, in particular Inflammatory Bowel Disease liaising with community and primary care services.
  • To participate in the provision of elective and emergency work of the general surgical service.
  • To provide, with the other Consultant Surgeons, the acute general surgical service at Walsall Manor Hospital operating a system of mutual out of hours cover to include the provision of prospective cover for the annual and study leave of colleagues.
  • To be available to provide advice to GPs by telephone whilst working as the on call Consultant.

  • To liaise with medical staff in other specialities and participate in the regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities of the hospital.
  • To partake in a 1:9 on-call rota for General Surgery.
