Job summary

Volunteers play an important part of patient carer and family experience at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust (WHT), and we take pride in the variety and breadth of volunteer roles we offer. WHT volunteers are a dedicated group of individuals all with the common goal of supporting the Trust in delivering the best experience to its patients, carers, families, and staff. Volunteers have been an invaluable asset to the Trust throughout the Covid 19 pandemic and continue to support the trust in a variety of ways.

Main duties of the job

In line with the Trust values provide efficient, effective, and comprehensive coordination of the Trust's voluntary service. Under the direction and support of the Patient Experience Manager the post holder will be responsible for ensuring the effective recruitment, induction, support, and placement of volunteers within the hospital and provide on-going line management for all existing Trust volunteers.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Responsible for the development of innovative and sustainable volunteer roles focused on improving experiences of patients, carers, families and staff.
  • Ensure that all volunteer roles are appropriately risk assessed and updated in accordance with local and national volunteering guidelines.
  • Routinely audit volunteer recruitment systems to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Organise recruitment campaigns for Volunteers utilising website, social media and local volunteer organisations and groups.
  • To lead the recruitment of volunteers in line with the Trust recruitment and volunteering policy; including DBS (Disclosure Barring Scheme) checks.
  • Ensure all volunteers are aware of their principle duties and what they should/should not be doing.
  • To lead on volunteer development including delivering corporate induction, mandatory training, role specific development needs and individual learning requests.
  • To routinely report on trust volunteering updates, recruitment stats and volunteer contributions internally including participation at the Patient Experience Group.
  • To supervise the volunteer administrator including work priorities, 1-1 / raise and praise meetings and annual PDR.
  • To produce the volunteer bulletin and develop further to meet changing practices and communication needs.
  • To organise volunteer celebration events including service recognition awards.
  • Responsible for training compliance for all existing volunteers in line with volunteer and training policy including mandatory training and local training as outlined in the role profile.
  • Alongside the patient experience manager, manage the better impact system and the Trusts relationship with the provider.
  • Ensure that an effective volunteer rota is in place; up to date and all volunteer hours are recorded using the better impact system.
  • Authorise travel and other expenses (in line with policy) to be paid to volunteers on a monthly basis and maintain a database of expenditure.
  • Liaise regularly with service leads to ensure volunteer opportunities meet the needs of the Trust and to work collaboratively to develop new roles.
  • To develop external relationships with third party volunteer organisations, community associations and local educational establishments, strengthening the Trusts community stance as a provider of volunteering opportunities.

  • Level 4 qualification in a relevant subject or demonstrable equivalent experience.
  • 5 GCSEs including Math and English at grade C or above.

  • Experience supervising junior colleagues.
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines, under pressure with conflicting priorities.
