Job summary
We are looking to appoint a substantive elective and emergency care Ear, Nose and Throat Consultant. The post holder will undertake duties in general Ear, Nose and Throat surgery with a specialist interest in Paediatrics ENT and Otology.
The post holder along with the other ENT Consultants, will be responsible for the efficient organization and effective management of the Head and Neck Service and general ENT patients (adult and Paediatrics). This role will require the post holder to be willing to work across regional network.
The post at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is currently in negotiation to be integrated into Black Country network, which involves working at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust. The job plan includes approximately 20% of total PAs working offsite at one of the hospital sites mentioned above.
The post will be contracted for 10 Programmed Activities per week and includes on call 1:5 weekday nights at Walsall Hospital. As Walsall operates a five-day service only Monday to Friday. All emergencies needing admission after 5pm on weekends are admitted to New Cross Hospital. (The network rota is 1:14)
Paediatrics work in week is accommodated in the paediatric unit at Walsall and surgery undertaken within the hospital's main emergency theatre. At the weekend, paediatrics is accommodated within the paediatric facilities available at New cross Hospital. The ENT department have a robust programme for mentoring the new Consultant appointment.

Main duties of the job
- To be responsible for ensuring a commitment in providing a high-quality ENT service to patients by continual development of practice in the light of research evidence and by audit against Clinical standards;
- To provide advice to primary and secondary care colleagues in other specialties in relation to ENT problems and overseeing the internal referrals assessed by SpRs;
- To provide a comprehensive outpatient service from clinics, including the management of patients referred as suspected Head and Neck cancers.Such patients will receive their diagnostics at Walsall and if suspicious, will be discussed at MDT prior to tertiary referral to the cancer centre.Benign conditions will continue to be managed at Walsall;
- To support teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students, and Postgraduate Medical Education in general. The Trust will strongly Support and allow time for CPD for the Successful candidate.
- To support and encourage audit and research and develop close links with academic initiatives.
- To actively participate in CME and personal development programmes;
- To support the on-going development of services for ENT Surgery, liaising with community and primary care services;

We are looking for a candidate with a commitment to excellence in team working and relationships, who can also demonstrate good leadership skills and be able to work with enthusiasm.
Applicants should possess full GMC registration, FRCS (or equivalent) and either already be on the Specialist Register or be within approximately 6 months of receiving their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview.
The successful candidate will be appointed under the current terms and conditions of service for NHS Consultants. Full consideration will be given to applicants who wish to apply for a reduced/part time contract.
